Be Greater Than You Can Imagine

Often while watching TV I will mute the commercials.

One reason is that the sound increases during commercials, which my wife, Norma Jean. finds irritating. She says I have the TV too loud anyway. Huh?

Also some commercials are repeated so many times that we grow weary of hearing them. Others we just find silly or trite. Anyway the mute button gives us a 3-4 minute respite.

Yesterday, however, a commercial appeared that I hadn’t seen before. It was by Bank OZK, headquartered in Little Rock, with several branches in the Tampa Bay area, plus on line banking. Continue reading

Hebrews 11:4

In one of his sermons W. A. Criswell told a story about the president of a great railway system who died.

“The funeral service was held at two o’clock on a weekday afternoon. At that exact moment, every train came to a dead stop. Every wheel ceased to turn. Every workman dropped his tools. Every clerk turned from his files. For three minutes, the entire vast railway system came to a complete stop.” Continue reading

When You Feel Forsaken

Have you ever felt like everyone was against you?

Your spouse was discontented. Distant.  And disengaged.   Your kids seemed sullen and angry.  Your boss was demanding.  Impossible to please.  A friend betrayed you.  Others turned on you.  No one listened.  Or understood.  Or seemed to care.  People who lauded and praised you a few days ago now turn on you with a spiteful venom.  Continue reading

Growing in Conviction

Athanasius, of Alexandria, was a 3rd century theologian who fearlessly opposed the teachings of Arius, who declared that Christ was not the eternal Son of God, but a subordinate being.

After being hounded through five exiles, Athanasius was finally summoned before emperor Theodosius, who demanded he cease his opposition to Arius. The emperor reproved him and asked, “Do you not realize that all the world is against you?” To which Athanasius quickly replied….

I Saw A Man Die

I

“I saw a man die the other day,” began a post by my friend, preaching colleague and fellow blogger, Roger Shouse.

It quickly caught my attention. Roger’s description of this man’s death was sobering and thought provoking.

I urge you to read it slowly. Thoughtfully. And introspectively. Continue reading

ONE BLOOD

It was on this date in 1868 that W. E. B. Du Bois was born in Great Barrington, Massachusetts.

As a teenager Du Bois became aware of the “vast veil” separating him from his white classmates. As a result, “he devoted most of his life to studying the position of Black Americas from a sociological point of view.”

Du Bois was a sociologist, historian, civil rights activist and author, who helped found the NAACP in 1909. While he had impressive academic credentials, including a doctorate from Harvard University, he was unable to get a job at a major university. Continue reading

Luke 18:9-14

There’s a story told about a businessman well known for his ruthlessness who once announced to writer Mark Twain, “Before I die I mean to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. I will climb Mount Sinai and read the 10 Commandments aloud at the top.”

“I have a better idea,” replied Twain. “You could stay in Boston and keep them.” Continue reading
