He’s My King!

Yesterday, we published a post with some thoughts spawned by the recent “No Kings” protest. If you missed it, take a couple of minutes to read it now.

I noticed on Facebook that several people have posted a video by late 20th-century African-American minister S. M. Lockridge. These words came toward the end of his famous sermon, “He’s My King.”

Today’s post offers our readers the transcript of that powerful presentation. It speaks to the greatness of Christ and his absolute supremacy and preeminence. Read it slowly. Thoughtfully. Reverently. And adoringly. Continue reading

No Kings? Really?

This past Saturday, “No Kings” protests, according to organizers, drew an estimated 7 million people at 2600 rallies and events across the USA.

The “No Kings” organizers are protesting the policies and what they perceive as the authoritarian rule of President Trump’s administration. Someone quipped on facebook that the protests must have worked. “I woke up Monday morning, and we still don’t have a King. Just a President.” Continue reading

Hebrews 2:1, 4 Warning Signs You May Be Drifting from Your Faith

“People do not drift toward Holiness,” wrote D. A. Carson.” We drift toward compromise and call it tolerance; we drift toward disobedience and call it freedom; we drift toward superstition and call it faith.”

Dr. Carson is right. Faith doesn’t dissipate overnight or in a single moment. It gradually slips and drifts. Unintentionally and accidentally.

For this reason, the Bible urges Believers to “pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it” (Heb. 2:1) Continue reading

When Fear Meets Faith

Many American manufacturers fear being sued by customers who misuse their products, so they go to great lengths to provide prominent warnings.

Every year, the Wacky Warning Labels™ Contest selects “the most absurd and silly warning labels attached to everyday products.”

Here were the winners: Continue reading

From the Fire to the Whisper: Elijah’s Journey of Zeal

“I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty,” the prophet Elijah proclaimed to God (1 Kings 19:10).

While Elijah towers tall as one of the most passionate of God’s greats, a man of courage, conviction, and commitment, the irony of his statement is contrasted with his now cowering in a cave.

Why? Continue reading

Weekly Recap: October 13-17

Greetings from Gatlinburg

After a wonderful week sharing the Word with the brethren at the Christian Home  Church in Butler County, KY, we have made our annual Fall foliage trip to the Great Smoky  Mountains.

This Sunday and the following Sunday, I will be preaching at the Cosby Church, 15 miles east of Gatlinburg on 321.  It’s a lovely, easy drive.  If you visit, you will enjoy the fellowship of these fine brethren.  They are served by their 93-year-old preacher, Olie Williamson, who preaches every Sunday, unless he can twist the arm of a guest preacher! Olie is amazing.  He still plays golf twice a week. And along with his lovely wife, Mary, he is a servant leader for this little mountain church and community. Continue reading

Why “Go to Church”?

Jonathan Banning is one of the fine young preachers in our brotherhood today. He is a co-laborer with Don Truex at the Temple Terrace Church.

On their church facebook page, which I recommend, Jonathan shares some excellent, thought-provoking posts. Here’s one I recently read that may challenge your current view of church attendance.

Don’t skip it because you are a regular attender. You may be the one who needs to reflect on this the most. Continue reading

A Faith Passed Down: The Legacy That Shaped My Soul

Last night I concluded a Gospel Meeting with the Christian Home Church in Butler County, Kentucky, about 30 miles North of Bowling Green.

Although I’ve preached there many times over the years, I’m constantly reminded of my spiritual heritage, traced back to that 100-year-old congregation. Continue reading

2 Peter 1:1-4, Precious Faith

When our daughter  Rachél was a little girl, I began calling her “Little Precious.” The moniker stuck, and even as an adult, she often signs a card or note to me on a special occasion as either “Little Precious” or “L. P.”

We call people precious who are important to us. It speaks to their value, worth, and the feelings we have for them. Continue reading

When Money Becomes a Secret: The Sin of Financial Infidelity

Recently, I was listening to financial expert Dave Ramsey, when a man called Dave’s show asking for advice on how to share some shocking financial news with his wife.

The couple had been married for 5 years, and the husband divulged his business dealings and investments, now totaling in the millions. His wife had no idea they were wealthy. He said that she was a spender and he was a saver. So, he wondered if and how he should share this financial information with her. Continue reading
