That’s what I thought.
Me neither. Continue reading

On Jason’s first day of school, the class was asked to stand, place their right hand over their heart and recite the Pledge of Allegiance.
The teacher, Mrs. Jones, watched the children as they began, “I pledge allegiance to the flag….” when she noticed Jason had his right hand over his left ear. She stopped and said, “Jason, put your hand over your heart.”
Jason replied, “It is over my heart!” Continue reading

“A man’s mind may be likened to a garden, which may be intelligently cultivated or allowed to run wild; but whether cultivated or neglected, it must, and will, bring forth.” wrote James A. Allen in his classic little book As A Man Thinketh.
“If no useful seeds are put into it, then an abundance of useless weed seeds will fall therein, and will continue to produce their kind,” Allen adds. Continue reading

My friend, fellow Hoosier and preaching colleague, Steve Wolfgang often offers some thought provoking posts from various scholars and church historians on his facebook page.
Some time ago, however, he shared a lighter piece by an unknown author that contains a bit of humor, but also may spark some serious reflection about our priorities, commitment and involvement in spiritual matters. Continue reading

Billie Burke was a famous actress of the early 20th century. She played “Gilda the good witch” in the Wizard of Oz musical. The story is told that Ms Burke was once traveling on a cruise ship when she noticed a man at the next table suffering from a bad cold.

Davon Huss tells the story about a man who once conned his way into the orchestra of the emperor of China although he could not play a note.
Whenever the group practiced or performed, he would hold his flute against his lips, pretending to play but not making a sound. He received a modest salary and enjoyed a comfortable living. Then one day the emperor requested a solo from each musician. Continue reading

Bryan Johnson’s goal is to never die. Yes, he’s planning to live forever.
According to a lengthy article by Philip Cheung for Time.com, Johnson, a multimillionaire tech entrepreneur swallows 111 pills a day. Sleeps in a laser-face-shield for collagen growth and wrinkle reduction. And has spent in excess of $4 million developing a life-extension system he calls “Blueprint.” Continue reading

“Chippie the parakeet never saw it coming. One second he was peacefully perched in his cage. The next he was sucked in, washed up, and blown over.”
“The problems began when Chippie’s owner decided to clean Chippie’s cage with a vacuum cleaner. She removed the attachment from the end of the hose and stuck it in the cage. The phone rang, and she turned to pick it up. She’d barely said “hello” when “ssssopp!” Chippie got sucked in.” Continue reading

Based on our calendar, summer ends today. And Fall begins tomorrow. In Florida that means a predicted high today of 84, and a low of 65. Although our local Dunkin’ is selling pumpkin spiced lattes, it doesn’t seem like Fall yet. But cooler temperatures will come. Sooner or later.
However, what has not cooled off, is reader interest in ThePreachersWord. We’re happy to be back on a regular posting schedule and appreciate the many comments and well wishes we’ve received over the past week. It’s encouraging for people to come up to me whether at church, when traveling, or even the other day at the YMCA and mention a blog post they’ve read. Thank you.
In that regard, WordPress indicates that many of our readers missed Thursday’s post, “Stop Saying Biological Women.” If you didn’t see it, please take time to read the courageous story of this former UK athlete, Riley Gaines, and her stand for Biblical truth. You’ll love her no-nonsense quotes about gender. Continue reading
