Broken

Yesterday was “Canada Day.” It’s somewhat equivalent to our “Independence Day” celebrated in the United States on July 4th.

Canada Day celebrates the anniversary of the Canadian Confederation which occurred on July 1, 1867, in which Britain recognized Canada as a “kingdom with its own right.” Informally it is referred to as “Canada’s birthday.”

Like Americans in the USA, Canadians are very proud of their country. Yesterday there were flags flying. Celebrations. Bar-b-ques. Parades. Musical entertainment. And, of course, fireworks. Continue reading

Mercy is Fundamental

In his book Experiencing God’s Forgiveness, Luis Palau, tells a story about a mother who once approached Napoleon seeking a pardon for her son.

The emperor replied that the young man had committed a certain offense twice and justice demanded death.

“But I don’t ask for justice,” the mother explained. “I plead for mercy.”

“But your son does not deserve mercy,” Napoleon replied. Continue reading

Do You Really Believe the Bible?

Yesterday Norma Jean and I spent the day at the Ark Encounter in Williamstown, Kentucky.

It was an incredible educational, informational, and faith building experience. It’s one thing to read about the dimensions of the ark and translate cubits into feet. It’s quite another to see how massive the Ark was, both outside and inside. Continue reading

Is “Hate the Sin, but Love the Sinner” Biblical?

A good friend of mine and a regular reader of ThePreachersWord texted me the other day and asked, “Does God hate the sin but love the sinner?”

“We’ve heard that all our lives,” he added. Yes, we have. But we didn’t read it in the Bible. Continue reading

Grace is Fundamental

I recently read a story that during the early days of the Civil War a young Union Solider was arrested on charges of desertion.

The solider was found guilty and sentenced to death.

President Lincoln heard about the soldier’s sentence, felt compassion, and decided to offer him a pardon. Continue reading

Weekly Recap: June 17-21

Greetings from Beverly  Hills, FL

This will be our last post from Florida for a while.  Monday we are leaving for a summer trip to Ontario, Canada.  This year we will be staying in Welland in the Niagara region.

While it will be nice to escape the oppressive Florida heat for a while, more importantly we are looking forward to being with our Canadian brethren again.  Already scheduled are preaching appointments in Wellandport, Hamilton, and Kingston.  Also we will be teaching the adult class at the Wellandport VBS.  If time and opportunity permits, we may add a couple more speaking engagements. Continue reading
