People Who Make a Difference

Versions of this have been around a long time. I recently saw this again on the facebook page of my friend and preaching colleague, Steve Wolfgang.

Discipline

In the spirit of “Throwback Thursday,” here is my first Thursday post ever on ThePreachersWord.

“The most valuable result of all education is the ability to make yourself do the thing you have to do, when it ought to be done, whether you like it or not.  It is the first lesson that ought to be learned and however early a person’s training begins, it is probably the last lesson a person learns thoroughly.”  –Thomas L. Huxley

I  know Huxley was right.   My parents tried to  teach me self-discipline, and I’m still learning it. Success requires self-discipline.  The student, the athlete, and the business person must all cultivate the habit of self-discipline.  It is true spiritually.

John 8:1-11

“He who is without sin let him cast the first stone.”

This may be one of the most misunderstood, misused and misapplied Bible quotes by both Christians and non-Christians alike.

The quote occurs in today’s passage, while Jesus was teaching in the Temple. He was rudely interrupted by the scribes and Pharisees, parading an immoral woman, who was placed in the center of the crowd. Continue reading →

God Will See

On this day, November 1, 1512, the Sistine Chapel in Rome, was exhibited for the public to see the finished work of the Italian artist Michelangelo.

After years of demonstrating his mastery of sculpture, Michelangelo was commissioned to paint the ceiling of the chapel with a series of amazing frescoes. The project expanded from a simple depiction of the twelve apostles to include more than four hundred figures, and nine scenes from the book of Genesis, the most famous being the creation of Adam. Word of the Week: Inclusion

“I didn’t feel anyone cared whether I was there or not.”

This was the response of 75% of the respondents who were asked in a survey why they had left the church.

Not surprisingly, research has shown that the more relationships a person develops in a congregation, the less likely they are to leave, or become inactive.

God is Good

There are 123 Bible verses that connect “good” and “God.”

Among them, “Truly, God, is good to Israel…” (Ps 73:1)

Frequently, we hear the refrain repeated “God is good…all the time.”

In a July facebook post, Wilson Adams offered this challenging insight to our understanding of God’s goodness.

Dealing With Your Past in the Present

“Feels like I’m going to be punished for the rest of my life,” lamented Dujuan “Zoe” Kennedy as he and four others stood outside the White House gate after being refused entrance.

Kennedy spent 14 years imprisoned for selling drugs and manslaughter. However, while incarcerated he diligently worked to educate himself and rehabilitate his life.

Following his release, Kennedy returned home to Detroit to mentor young people at risk in engaging in criminal behavior. It has become his passion and life mission to help those turn their lives around who are heading down a dangerous path. Continue reading →

1 Corinthians 10:1-13

Warren Wiersbe tells the story about a preacher who presented a sermon series entitled “The Sins of the Saints.”

Apparently the sermons “offended” the sensibilities of a sister who strongly disapproved of the series. “After all, she told the preacher, “sin in the life of a Christian is different from sin in the life of an unsaved person.” Continue reading →
