Weekly Recap: September 7-11

This has been an interesting week of reflection and celebration, with Labor Day and 9/11 falling in the same week this year.

No matter the challenges, problems, and shortcomings we face, we’re reminded that we have much to be thankful for in America.  I’m reminded of Jesus’ words in Luke 12:48: “To whom much is given, much is required.”  This speaks to the need for personal accountability, faithful stewardship of our resources, and diligence in our ministry.  (Hmm, sounds like a =future blog post, or 3-point sermon) Continue reading →

9/11: What Has—and Hasn’t—Changed

We were living in Spring Hill, Tennessee, when 9/11 occurred.

I was preparing to leave for my office at the Jackson Heights Church in Columbia when Norma hollered from the family room, “Come here! Something’s happened!”

She was watching the Today show, which was airing the breaking news that a plane had flown into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Questions, concern, and speculation followed about the cause. Continue reading →

What were you doing 25 years ago today—on September 10, 2001? Where were you? What were you thinking? Feeling? Doing?

Chances are you can’t remember. I know I can’t.

What Is the Gospel?

Ask ten people, and you may receive ten different answers. Some will describe how Christians ought to live. Others will speak of loving God, loving our neighbor, helping the hurting, or going to heaven.

Love Keeps No Record of Wrongs

Jay E. Adams, in his excellent book Christian Living in the Home, tells of a marriage counselor meeting with a troubled couple he called Sue and Wilbur.

Sue began by saying she had an ulcer, but the doctor said it was not from a physical cause. She then pulled from a large bag a manuscript about an inch thick, typed on both sides, and slapped it down on the counselor’s desk.

Weekly Recap: August 31-September 4

It’s good to be back this week after our annual anniversary blogging break. Thank you all for the many kind “Happy Anniversary” wishes.  We appreciate it.

Thinking About Thinking

Ralph Waldo Emerson, the 19th-century essayist, poet, and philosopher, wrote a great deal about the importance of thinking for oneself. He once lamented that “the problem with men today is that they don’t think.”

Thomas Edison echoed this sentiment when he opined, “Five percent of the people think; ten percent of the people think they think; and the other eighty-five percent would rather die than think.” Continue reading →

Bearing the Weight of Grief

Saturday night, Norma Jean and I watched the live stream of the Grand Ole Opry, which honored the recently deceased country music legend, Dolly Parton.
