Ephesians 1:7, Four Words That Changed Everything

Sin.

Sin is a crushing debt that’s impossible to repay.
Sin is drowning in the ocean with no hope of rescue.
Sin is filth that soap cannot scrub away.
Sin is a cancer spreading with no remedy for a cure.
Sin is poison sweetened with honey, tasty at first, but deadly in the end. Continue reading

Spiritual Lessons from a Football Coach

Last week, Indiana University completed an improbable journey by winning the national football championship.

When coach Curt Cignetti was hired, IU had the ignoble distinction of losing more games in its 140-year history than any other university. In the past two years, Cignetti and IU are 27–2: Big Ten Champions, Rose Bowl and Peach Bowl winners, and National Champions—culminating in a perfect 16–0 season this year. Continue reading

To Know Him is to Love Him

Growing up in the 1950’s and 1960’s, I recall a song written by Phil Spector and recorded by The Teddy Bears. It begins this way: Continue reading

Women Who Glory in their Shame

“I was 29, I was living in Seattle, I was in graduate school, I was dating someone… It was never a question. I got pregnant, and I was like, ‘Well, alright, I guess I’m having an abortion,’” relates Amelia Bonow in a matter-of-fact fashion.

Today marks the 43rd anniversary of Roe v. Wade, and abortion activists are working harder than ever to push back against the pro-life movement and to make abortion seem like a simple, normal, rational decision that any woman would make. Continue reading

Great Verses of the Bible: Proverbs 3:5-6

There’s an old Woody Allen movie called Love and Death, set in 18th-century Russia, starring Allen (Boris) and Diane Keaton (Sonja). It’s a comedy about a neurotic soldier and his distant cousin who formulate a plot to assassinate Napoleon.

In one scene, Boris walks past Sonja’s room. He hears voices and stops to inquire. Continue reading

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Message of Character

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

Few quotations in American history are as widely recognized as these words from Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, delivered more than half a century ago on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. Continue reading

Word of the Week: Confidence

I recently watched a video on Time.com about a Canadian pilot, Raphael Langumier, who took his four-year-old daughter on her first aerobatic plane ride and filmed her reaction.

As the plane looped and rolled, little Léa burst into laughter—pure delight written across her face. When the ride ended, she eagerly told her father to do it again. And again.

That kind of fearless joy reminded me of a story I heard several years ago—one where trust was not expressed in laughter, but in calm confidence. Continue reading

Jesus Centered Worship

In John’s Revelation, Jesus stands at the center of worship in the great throne scene of chapter 5. Angels, living creatures, and elders—numbering ten thousand times ten thousand—cry out with a loud voice:

“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom, and strength and honor, and glory and blessing!” Continue reading
