From the Fire to the Whisper: Elijah’s Journey of Zeal

“I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty,” the prophet Elijah proclaimed to God (1 Kings 19:10).

While Elijah towers tall as one of the most passionate of God’s greats, a man of courage, conviction, and commitment, the irony of his statement is contrasted with his now cowering in a cave.

Weekly Recap: October 13-17

Greetings from Gatlinburg

After a wonderful week sharing the Word with the brethren at the Christian Home  Church in Butler County, KY, we have made our annual Fall foliage trip to the Great Smoky  Mountains.

This Sunday and the following Sunday, I will be preaching at the Cosby Church, 15 miles east of Gatlinburg on 321.  It’s a lovely, easy drive.  If you visit, you will enjoy the fellowship of these fine brethren.  They are served by their 93-year-old preacher, Olie Williamson, who preaches every Sunday, unless he can twist the arm of a guest preacher! Olie is amazing.  He still plays golf twice a week. And along with his lovely wife, Mary, he is a servant leader for this little mountain church and community. Continue reading

Why “Go to Church”?

Jonathan Banning is one of the fine young preachers in our brotherhood today. He is a co-laborer with Don Truex at the Temple Terrace Church.

On their church facebook page, which I recommend, Jonathan shares some excellent, thought-provoking posts. Here’s one I recently read that may challenge your current view of church attendance.

Don’t skip it because you are a regular attender. You may be the one who needs to reflect on this the most. Continue reading

A Faith Passed Down: The Legacy That Shaped My Soul

Last night I concluded a Gospel Meeting with the Christian Home Church in Butler County, Kentucky, about 30 miles North of Bowling Green.

Although I’ve preached there many times over the years, I’m constantly reminded of my spiritual heritage, traced back to that 100-year-old congregation. Continue reading

2 Peter 1:1-4, Precious Faith

When our daughter  Rachél was a little girl, I began calling her “Little Precious.” The moniker stuck, and even as an adult, she often signs a card or note to me on a special occasion as either “Little Precious” or “L. P.”

We call people precious who are important to us. It speaks to their value, worth, and the feelings we have for them. Continue reading

When Money Becomes a Secret: The Sin of Financial Infidelity

Recently, I was listening to financial expert Dave Ramsey, when a man called Dave’s show asking for advice on how to share some shocking financial news with his wife.

The couple had been married for 5 years, and the husband divulged his business dealings and investments, now totaling in the millions. His wife had no idea they were wealthy. He said that she was a spender and he was a saver. So, he wondered if and how he should share this financial information with her. Continue reading

The Zeal of John the Baptist

In his classic poem “A Psalm of Life,” Henry Wadsworth Longfellow penned these inspiring lines:

“Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time.”

The poet’s words echo a spiritual truth that ought to resonate with all Bible Believers. They speak to the power of a noble purpose, a deep faith, and a steadfast hope. Continue reading

Weekly Recap: October 6-10

Greetings from the Volunteer State!

Yep. Like Willie Nelson sang, “We’re on the road again.”

We’re on the way to Bowling Green, KY, where I’ll be preaching at a meeting in Butler County at the Christian Home Church.  This is a special place for me. I’m returning to my spiritual roots. It’s where my Papaw and Granny Key attended church while my Mom was growing up.  In fact, Mom was baptized there.  Well, actually, nearby in Welch’s Creek.  Over the years, I’ve been blessed to preach there on several occasions. Still, it’s always special to return—a wonderful trip down memory lane that reminds me of the importance of family, faith, and the legacy passed down to each of us from past generations. Responding to Ungodliness

My facebook friend and preaching colleague Russ Bowman recently posted this scriptural observation.

When godly people react to ungodliness in ungodly ways, then ungodliness has prevailed.

Remember who you are, and Whose you are. Continue reading

Finding Peace in a World of Worry

A recent survey revealed that, on average, Americans spend two hours and 18 minutes a day caught in the grip of worrisome thoughts.

While the problem of worry is nothing new, it does seem that anxiety is creeping into everyday life as the norm, with a persistence not seen in recent generations.

In fact, the survey indicated that “62% of Gen Z and millennial respondents report feeling constantly anxious, compared to 38% of older generations.” Continue reading
