The Lord Thundered from Heaven

As I sit in the early morning darkness drinking hot coffee and writing this post, I’m listening to the rumbling sounds of thunder.

I didn’t know rain was in the forecast today. But, yes, my iPhone says “thunderstorm.” “Lightening.” “Rain 100% chance.”

For a few minutes there’s stillness. Just the gentle patter of rain. Then suddenly there’s another resounding thunder roll, a flash of lightening, and an unsettling cracking sound. Continue reading

Knowledge is Fundamental

From my files is a collection of supposed answers that children have given to their Bible class teachers through the years.

The first book of the Bible was Guinness.

Noah’s wife was called Joan of Ark.

Sampson slated {sic}the Philistines with the axe of the apostles.

Weekly Recap: August 12-16

Greetings from Beverly Hills, FL

Yes, we’re home.  It feels good after being gone for almost two months.  And especially so after living out a suitcase in hotels for the past two weeks.   It’s nice to get up, walk to my kitchen, make my own coffee, and write from my little office while sitting in my robe.  For some reason the Hampton Inn discourages that. Why I Didn’t Leave the Church

My lesson Wednesday night, “Seen With Blinded Eyes,” based on Matt Bassford’s hymn, Exalted, reminded me of a phrase in Hebrews 11:4

It’s a statement about the ancient antediluvian Abel. “Through his faith, though he died, he still speaks.”

Although Matt has passed from this life, he is still speaking this summer at Charlestown Road through his hymn and the 9 lessons based on it. Continue reading

The lessons are based on the late Matt Bassford’s hymn “Exalted.” I was one of 9 speakers given a specific phrase of the song. You can hear the hymn and listen to the lessons on their web page. Continue reading

Psalm 119:18–Open My Eyes

Open my eyes, that I may see
Glimpses of truth thou hast for me;
Place in my hand the wonderful key
That shall unclasp and set me free.

The words of this hymn, written by Midwesterner, Clara H. Scott, have been sung by Christians for over 125 years.

Each stanza speaks to an increasing awareness and receptivity to God’s Word. Open eyes. Open ears. Open mouth. Open heart. Continue reading

The Real Source of Unity

While we have been on our blogging break, we’ve enjoyed watching the Olympic Games.

Although there were some occasions of controversy during the Games, they were a nice respite from political bickering, and a steady stream of bad news. Continue reading

Virtue is Fundamental

Our writing and preaching theme this year is Fundamentals of faith. So, far we have explored 29 basics to living a life of faith.

Today, we begin a 7 lesson series based on 2 Peter 1:5-8, which Peter affirms that if we “add” these qualities to our faith and “abound” in them we “will never fall.” That’s an incredibly bold claim. So, they must be important basics to Christian living. Continue reading
