White Noise

Today begins our annual holiday blogging  break.  Each year we have recognized the top posts of the year based on reader views (“hits”).  This year we are reblogging the top 12 that have received significant hits since they were originally posted.  Coming in at #12 is this Facebook Friday post  back in January from the pen of Matt Bassford, who recently passed away.  It’s a short read, but well worth reading again.

Live With a Good Conscience

Not everything on social media is bad. On Friday’s we publish something we’ve found good, informative,  thought provoking or challenging on facebook.

Today’s Facebook Friday is a post I found on Daily Bible Notes by Andy Sochor from Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Andy’s article on the topic of conscience spurred a few thoughts of our own. Continue reading

12 Days of Happiness

The other day at the YMCA where we work out, they were passing out cards challenging us to participate in the 12 days of happiness.

With holiday busyness and the stress that often accompanies it, this is the Y’s way to encourage fitness of body, soul and mind. On the back of the card were “12 Suggested Self Care Activities.” Continue reading

Malachi 1:1-4:6

After preaching the first lesson introducing his sermon series on “The Sins of the Saints,” a sister chastised the preacher as she left the building.

When he asked her why she was upset about the sermon, she replied, “The sins of Christians are different from other people.” Continue reading

A Tribute to Paul Earnhart

There is a stanza in The Psalm of Life by the 19th century poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow that comes to mind as I think of the life of Paul Earnhart.

Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time ; Continue reading

Pressing On To Maturity

“You are only young once, but you can stay immature indefinitely,” once quipped the humorist and American poet Ogden Nash.

I suppose there’s something attractive about the Peter Pan mentality of enjoying the carefree life of childhood, never growing up, and avoiding adulting. Continue reading

Weekly Recap: December 4-8

Greetings from Beverly Hills, Florida

Just so our friends up North know, not everything is sunshine and lollipops here in Florida.

Our templatizes dipped into the upper 30’s this week.  And the highs never got out of the 60’s for several days.  Wednesday night I had to wear a sweater to Church.  Yep.  We have cold weather too.  But today is predicting a high of 81. Happy days are here again.

Well, enough “complaining.”  We’re richly blessed in so many ways.  And thankful for the opportunities to minister in the Word–regardless of the weather.

This week, as noted in our Wednesday post, marked blog post #3500.  If you’re new to ThePreachersWord, you can easily access any of the 3500 posts based on the categories listed, or use the WordPress search engine using a key word or Bible verse. Continue reading

Psalm 98

Isaac Watts was an 18th century English minister and hymn writer, who had become dissatisfied with the songs and quality of singing in British churches.

In his book, Then Sings My Soul, Robert J. Morgan credited Watts with ‘inventing” what he called “the English hymn.” Watts, however, had his critics, including minister Thomas Bradbury who called his songs “whims instead of hymns.” Continue reading
