Would Jesus Say, “Just Follow Your Heart?”

Have you ever wondered what Jesus would do in modern day situations?

If Jesus lived now, what would be His response to current issues regarding abortion? Same sex marriage? Gender Identity?

Well, your wait is over. Now with Artificial Intelligence (AI), we can know what Jesus would say. Maybe. Or maybe not.

There is now available on Apple platforms a new AI Christian App (WWJD) that purports to answer what Jesus would do in our current culture.

In an article by Michael Foust, in Christian Headlines.com, he reveals some of the answers.

When asked, “if abortion is wrong,” the “AI Jesus” quoted Psalm 139:13, but added, “Ultimately it is your heart that should drive your actions.”

Similar answers, were given to other questions regarding homosexuality, changing genders, and same sex marriage.

The app, which is rated 4.8 out of 5 stars also waffled on its answer to the question, “Are there multiple paths to heaven?” The “AI Jesus” quoted John 14:6 where Jesus affirmed, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” But then added, “While my teachings emphasize the importance of faith in me, it is not for me to judge who will or will not enter heaven.”

Obviously, the “AI Jesus” doesn’t know the Jesus of the Bible. Jesus never told anyone, “Just follow your heart.” He did say to love God with all your heart. But he spoke about the heart which would produce “evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies” (Matt. 15:19).

Jesus warned about those with a “hard heart,” those who were “slow of heart,” others with a “doubting heart,” and some with an “evil heart.” Jesus knew what the prophet Jeremiah wrote, when he said “the heart was deceitful” (Jer. 17:9).

Instead of following your heart, Jesus said, “If you love me, keep my commandments” (Jn. 14:15).  Furthermore, Jesus was clear he proclaimed, “He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him — the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day”(Jn. 12:48).

“Follow your own heart ”is a catchy phrase. It’s popular. It’s easy. It’s flattering. It feels good. And sometimes it works. Sometimes….if the heart is guided by God’s Word. But when we just follow our own carnal feelings, our natural instincts, and our own gut feelings without divine counsel, then there’s a potential for problems.

Following our own heart may cause us to stray from Jesus’ Word. It may land us in a moral mess. It may hurt other people. It may destroy our marriage. It may rupture relationships. And destroy fellowship with godly people. It may leave us feeling guilty. It will ultimately be spiritually destructive, both in this life and in the life come.

The one phrase that describes the entire era of the Old Testament Judges was “everyone did what was right in their own eyes.” In other words, they followed their heart. When you read the history of that period, it was a dark time. A time of chaos, wickedness, spiritual decay, and societal upheaval. Following one’s own heart apart from the guidance of God’s written Word, will not lead us “in paths of righteousness.”

Modern technology has many advantages, some of which may help us in our mission and ministry. But just give me the Jesus of the Bible. The Jesus of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Not the “AI Jesus” with an equivocating message.

Finally, let’s heed the words of the wise man when he wrote and warned:

He who trusts in his own heart is a fool,
But whoever walks wisely will be delivered.
–Prov 28:26

  1. For those who place a stumbling block before others so they eat food sacrificed to idols and commit sexual immorality, Jesus has this to say. Repent! Otherwise I will come to you shortly and wage war against them with the sword of My mouth (Rev. 2:14;16). For those who overcome, Jesus will reveal the hidden manna. And then in Rev. 22:16 Jesus says. I am the Root and the Offspring of David and the Bright Morning Star.
