Serving and Protecting

This random post appeared on my facebook news feed recently by Emma Isabella. I don’t know her, but she shared a compelling and touching story by Emanuel Dotch, who’s a police officer for the Pritchard, Alabama, police department.

“Tonight while I was out riding around looking for something to eat, I was riding on I-10 and I noticed this elderly lady driving by herself headed towards Florida.” Continue reading

Heaven: Fantasy or Fact?

“What’s in the future for us?” Danny DeVito recently asked fellow actor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The 75 year old politician, actor, and former bodybuilder retorted, “It reminds me of Howard Stern’s question to me. ‘Tell me, governor, what happens to us when we die?’ I said, ‘Nothing. You’re six feet under. Anyone that tells you something else is a (expletive deleted) liar,’” Continue reading

Matthew 11:28-30

Richard Swenson is a physician, futurist, and author who wrote a book entitled, “Margin: Restoring Emotional, Physical, Financial, and Time Reserves to Overloaded Lives.”He describes modern society as harried, hassled, and overloaded with no room left for rest.

Dr Swenson observes, “Overload is not having time to finish the book you’re reading on stress. Margin is having time to read it twice. Overload is fatigue. Margin is energy. Overload is red ink. Margin is black ink. Overload is hurry. Margin is calm. Overload is anxiety. Margin is security. Overload is a disease of our day. Margin is the cure.” Continue reading

4 Thoughts on the Anniversary of the Dobbs Decision

This past weekend was the one-year anniversary of the Dobbs Decision when the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade. As a result the issue of abortion was returned to the states.

While abortions still occur, the number has decreased. Babies’ lives are being saved. So, from that standpoint we rejoice. And thank God.

While we could site statistics, surveys, and statement from leaders representing their point of view, our country continues, however, to be deeply divided over the abortion issue. Continue reading

Sowing Seeds to Benefit Others

“Success is knowing your purpose in life, growing to reach your maximum potential, and sowing seeds that benefit others,” wrote John Maxwell in his book The Success Journey.

True success in any area of life is not independent from other people. We learn from others. Find inspiration from others. And receive encouragement from others.

But more than that, much of our satisfaction in life is derived from helping other people. By lifting them up. By feeling like we’re making a difference. By knowing that our life matters. Continue reading

What Says the Scripture about the Grace of God?

This week I’ve been participating in a lecture series with three other brothers at the Southside Church in Pasadena, Texas, speaking on the theme “What Says the Scripture.”

Yesterday morning Jordan Shouse spoke about “The Grace of God.” You would benefit from listening to the entire 45 minute lesson. It was powerfully presented with Biblical principles that answer many of the challenges people have regarding grace. Continue reading

The Path To God

“Are there many paths to God?” asked David Banning as he began his lecture Wednesday morning at Southside.

Religious surveys reveal that about 70% of Americans believe there are many ways to God. Surprisingly, however, an October 2022 poll showed that 56% of Evangelicals believed all religions are equally valid. “More professing Christians reject the exclusivity of Christ,” the survey said than at any previous time in history Continue reading

“I AM the Lord”

Russ Bowman presented a powerful lesson Tuesday morning at the Southside Lectures entitled “I AM the Lord.”

This expression is found 165 times in the Old Testament Scriptures. 45 times in Leviticus. “Lord” is the English translation of the Hebrew word that refers to Yahweh, often translated as Jehovah. Continue reading

What Says The Scripture?

Yesterday morning David Banning and Jordan Shouse kicked off the 43rd annual Southside Lectures. David spoke about “Handling the Scripture.” And Jordan exhorted us to “Stand Firm for God.”

Both lessons reminded us of the sacredness of the Scripture. Their relevance in the 21st century. And need for each of us to respect their authority. It’s an age old plea but one that bears repeating to each generation on a regular basis. Continue reading
