In the last week of Jesus’ life, he again finds the temple defiled by the religious leaders. They had turned the court where Gentiles could come and learn about God into a mercenary business, instead of a missionary business.
Jesus said, “My house shall be called a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves” (Matt 21:13).
Today the Temple or House of God is the church (1 Tim. 3:15, Eph. 2:21). It is a people not a place. Thus, we should be holy. We ought to be a sanctified and consecrated people as we assemble as God’s Holy Temple. Nothing should be done to desecrate or defile it (us) with ungodly motives, unscriptural actions, or unholy thoughts.
When there is prayer and praise in God’s house, when the Word is preached, and the focus is Christ and His cross, there is the power to change people’s lives and produce the fruit of the spirit. Worship ought to enrich our soul , spiritually edify our fellow worshipers, and glorify God.
Today, may we as the Temple of God, worship and work together to keep it free from impetuosity, impurity, and impiety.
