Another Milestone: 700 Posts!

The Preacher of Ecclesiastes wrote, “Of making many books there is no end, and much study is a weariness of the flesh.” If he were alive today, he may quip:

“Of the making of blogs there is no end, and writing new posts is really wearisome!”

In the big world of blogging, ThePreachersWord is tiny! According to one source, there are over 152 million blogs on the internet. A new blog is created somewhere every second! And the largest site attracts over 46 million visitors each month!

However, today is another milestone for ThePreachersWord. This is post #700. It still amazes me a bit! We began on January 1, 2012, with no “followers.” No readers. No archives. And no idea where this would lead!

According to WordPress, today we have 2862 followers and 126 topics categorized for easy reference. ThePreachersWord has been read in 184 countries and territories around the world! Our posts have been copied for bulletin articles. Short talks. And Lord supper devotions. We rejoice in whatever good has been accomplished, and for whatever way our readers have been helped, encouraged and edified.

Last week I received a call from Carlos, a preacher in Chile, who reads my blog. He requested some Bible class material. We had a good chat.  As I hung up, I thought, “Wow! This is incredible!” While modern technology may be criticized with some negative societal consequences, there are many positives. Expanding our influence for good. Sharing the Gospel around the world in a nano second! Making available material that others can use. And making new friends, like Carlos!

As I reflect back over 2 ½ years  I ago, I was looking for a way to expand my ministry.   Time and opportunity had come together in an unexpected and unique way for me to consider blogging as a means to share the Word. Three years ago I didn’t know what a blogger was. “Now I are one!”

These reflections remind me of three important principles that apply to all of us in life.

(1) Opportunities for doing good abound.   They are everywhere. However, we must be seeking opportunities. Have our eyes open to see opportunities. And then be willing to seize them. The Bible says, “As we have opportunity, let us do good…”

(2) Setting a goal is necessary. As in all of life, we operate better in the context of pursuing some goal. Goals excite us. Energize us. And encourage us. They move us forward. Give us direction. And provide a means of measurement. We began with a goal to post something every day. We’ve since modified that to five days a week. A couple of times a year we take a short break. But, I learned I need a goal to keep on blogging!

(3) Daily discipleship is a key ingredient to success in any endeavor. How do you write 700 posts? One day at a time! Success in any venture is rooted in our daily decisions. Our daily disciplines. Our daily practices.

I imagine at some point we will bring this blog to an end. But for the foreseeable future, we will continue our daily posts of ThePreachersWord. We appreciate our readers’ comments, questions, and suggestions.

We have been posting a “Word of the Week” on Monday and a special column on Friday called “It’s Friday. But Sunday’s Coming!” We are beginning this week every Wednesday to write on a favorite Bible verse. If you have a special verse that you would like featured, please let me know.

Thanks to each you who encouraged me in this effort. I sincerely appreciate it. And pray that whatever good is accomplish, that God is glorified.

  3. Nice to meet you, Ken.
I have come here through Ultimate Blog Challenge. I’m a Christian living in Japan.
If it were not for the Internet, I would never read what you have written.
    Congratulations on your 700th post.

  4. Hi Ken, I really enjoyed the three points and the opening verse. lol Blogging can seem wearisome but the rewards make it worth it when you know you are changing peoples lives. I think a lot of times people don’t look around long enough to see the abundance of opportunities around them. and how powerful is having a goal in life?? It can completely change the way a person approaches the day. If we can just focus on one day at a time it would make life a lot more joyful!

It was great reading your blog! and congratulations on your 700th post!!!! WOOO HOOOO!!!

P.S. I’m joining you from the UBC 😉

  5. Congratulations on your milestone, and thank you for sharing your wisdom.
