Critics Cry “Fowl Play” On Chick-fil-A

(Here’s the #1 post of 2012 based on both hits and views.  Who knew a chicken company could cause such a flap?!)

I like Chick-fil-A.  I like their chicken sandwich. I like their chicken noodle soup.  I like their salads.  I like their shakes.  I like their waffle fries.  And I really like their sausage biscuit.  But not everyone likes Chick-fil-A as much as I do. Critics are crying, “Fowl!”

Boston mayor, Thomas Menino, in an interview with the Boston Herald said,  “Chick-fil-A doesn’t belong in Boston.”  He is vowing to block the restaurant chain from opening a store there.

The Jim Henson Company which has produced characters for “The Muppets,” and has worked with the Atlanta based chain to create products for their kids’ meals has severed their relationship.

Singer, Audra McDonald, tweeted, “Not that I ate much Chick-fil-A before but I sho nuff don’t have an appetite for it now.”

The LA Times, the Atlanta Constitution and other major newspapers are reporting that within a few hours thousands had joined activists groups and signed petitions of protest and of boycott.

So what has Chick-fil-A done that’s so horrendous?  Served contaminated food?  Cheated customers?  Been unfair to workers? Abused cows?

No.  When their President and CEO Dan Cathy was interviewed by Baptist Press and asked about their support of the traditional family, he responded,”Well guilty as charged.”

Mr. Cathy went on to say, “We are very much supportive of the family — the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family owned business, a family led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that.”

It that all?  Surely he must have uttered a derogatory slur?  An ugly, insensitive epitaph?  Or at least an unkind word?  No!

In fact he emphasized very positively “We operate as a family business … our restaurants are typically led by families…We want to do anything we possibly can to strengthen families. We are very much committed to that.”

When the story hit the lamestream media, liberal, pro-homosexual activists became incensed.  Chad Griffin, president of the Human Rights Campaign that works for same-sex-marriage, said. “As the country moves toward inclusion, Chick-fil-A has staked out a decidedly stuck-in-the-past mentality.”

Dan Cathy and the company that his father, Truett Cathy founded,  has been vilified, reviled, and ridiculed.  Ironically, Cathy and those of us who hold the view of traditional family are called “haters,” “intolerant,” and “bigoted.”

I guess we are supposed to be “tolerant” of behavior that violates our Christian principles, but homosexual activists are excused from being tolerant and respectful of our values.  Can anyone see a double standard here?

Dan Cathy, never said one word about gay marriage.  He only spoke in favor of what he believed to be traditional marriage!  But you can’t do that today!  Can you imagine what would have happened had the Chick-A-fil CEO quoted the apostle Paul from Romans 1:20-28 where he calls homosexual activity, “vile”, “shameful” and “unnatural?” I wonder what Griffin will say if he ever finds out that two entire cities were once burned to the ground over this issue?!

Responding to the criticism, Chick-Fil-A used its Facebook Page to make this statement. “The Chick-Fil-A culture and service tradition in our restaurants is to treat every person with honor, dignity and respect – regardless of their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender.  Going forward, our intent is to leave the policy debate over same-sex marriage to the government and political arena.” To date the post has received almost 69,000 “likes” and over 24,000 comments.

Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabbe, who has his own show on Fox, said he was “incensed at the vitriolic assaults” on the fast food chain and declared, Wednesday, August 1 “Chick Fil-A Appreciation Day.”  His effort is not sponsored by the corporation, but a personal effort to encourage others to show support for a company founded on and operating by Christian principles.  Huckabee observed, “Too often, those on the left make corporate statements to show support for same-sex marriage, abortion, or profanity, but if Christians affirm traditional values, we’re considered homophobic, fundamentalists, hate-mongers, and intolerant.”

I think after all of this I like Chick-A-Fil even more!   So, tomorrow I’m going to “eat mor chikin”!

I think it strange that if I agree with same sex marriage, etc, you are an open minded person and wonderful. If you disagree ( as I do), now I don’t have the same right to say what I believe and now should be kept from doing business in a state. Question–who is being a bigot, closed minded and not wanting others who disagree with my option, to be allowed to speak out how they feel?? Why can’t I say my belief , getting the same respect as others expect to receive with the different view. It is time we speak up, stop the name calling but speaking the truth. I applaud Chick-fil-A for doing so!

Right on. It seems as though they want us to justify their sins by being areeable to their sins. I have no right to say it is a sin against my God.

It is clear from Biblical history that following Christ comes with a price. Many have paid with their lives. I don’t know if Mr. Cathy is a Christian, in the New Testament definition, or is just a “religious man”, but apparently he is willing to pay a price for his, and his companis’s, Bible based philosophy on marriage and family.

I haven’t eaten at a Chic Filet for over 15 years. I have no reason for that, never had a bad meal there. Liked their Chicken Sandwich as I recall. I will eat there as often as I can now, just to take up the space lleft by those who support the evil of homosexuality. Sort like a reverse boycott. And, I will tell the store manager why I am eating there.

DITTO – CAL AND I ARE GOING TO CHICK-FIL-A TODAY. ONE OF OUR FAVORITE PLACES AS WE ALSO LIKE TO SUPPORT A FAITH BASED BUSINESS. THEY HAVE ALSO GIVEN MANY YOUNG CHRISTIAN KIDS A GREAT WORK ENVIRONMENT.

  7. It is true that bigotry, intolerance, and hatefulness reside on both sides of the fence. One thing that concerns me though is that Jesus left us with the directives to love God and love man and to leave judging up to God. New Testament biblical principles for holding one another accountable, in love, was for members who had chosen and decided to join in community with the first believers. Going and making disciples of the men and spreading the good news of Jesus’ restoration and reconciliation.

Regardless of which side of the matter we fall on, which doctrine or theology we believe, returning spite for spite is the one thing that may have existed in Old Testament governance, but we were directed to leave up to God to avenge.

    • Thanks for reading my blog and for your comments. I totally agree that Christians ought not to hate or demonstrate any type of ill will toward those in sin….Yes, we should take the gospel to them, just like Paul did at Corinth. And as a result many sinners came to Christ…”sexual immoral, idolaters, adulterers, and homosexuals” to name a few. And they were “washed, sanctified and justified” by the blood of Jesus. (1Corinthians 6:9-11). As for judging, God is the ultimate judge of people’s eternal destiny. I do not occupy that place. Yet, he has entrusted me with the gospel to “judge righteous judgment” (John 7:24). But, I am to “speak the truth in love” (Ephesians 4:16), not with malice, spite, or anger. I think Mr. Cathy has done a nice job of stating in a very positive and loving way his Biblical position with hurling ugly epithets. It would be nice if those who disagree with him would respond with the same spirit! Again, thank you for reading ThePreachersWord and taking the time to comment. I appreciate it.

At this past Sunday afternoon service Colly Caldwell mentioned Chick-fil-a and the Boston mayor in his sermon about spreading the gospel, and said that “most of America is not gay, but the gay voices are being heard right now.” Me and my wife love eating there, and definitely plan to go on August 1st and show our support for them for speaking out about it, but not being judgemental at all.

[I hope that Griffin isn’t too chicken to chew on this crispy web morsel!]

    Thanks, Gays, for Hurrying Up

Google “Zombietime” and click on “Up Your Alley Fair.” After recovering, Yahoo “God to Same-Sexers: Hurry Up” on the “ucmpage” listing (even Jesus told Judas to hurry up – John 13:27). Also Yahoo “Dangerous Radicals of the Religious Right.”
Read this before the predicted California earthquake happens a la Rev.16:19 (“the cities of the nations fell”) – and before hurricanes, tornadoes, droughts and other disasters occur! The fast-moving goal of Gaydom is to quietly sneak its depravity on to every Main Street on earth while normal folks stay asleep and do nothing. I wonder how soon San Francisco’s underground saint – San Andreas – will get a big jolt out of the public gay porn that goes on over his head in “Madam” Nancy Pelosi’s brothel district in front of children! Not one to mince words, Jesus said in Mark 9:42 that anyone hurting a child in any way deserves to be hanged and have his body thrown into the ocean!
It’s far from coincidental that the more America elevates gays and senseless violence (see the predicted “days” of “Lot” and “Noah” in Luke 17), the more the cost of gas, food etc. goes up! If America is smart, it will pick up the big dust-covered book everyone owns and almost never reads – no, not the Sears catalog – and find out that the One who made the universe has some rights too! (Also Google “Obama Fulfilling the Bible.”)
Gays like to say that Jesus didn’t explicitly mention homosexuality. Well, when gays are about to have a birthday, they don’t talk about all the things they don’t want. Instead they speak positively about what they’d like to receive. In the same manner Jesus, instead of negatively listing every sexual variation and perversion that He knew mankind would invent, avoided an endless list of “thou-shall-nots” and positively stated that marriage was created for only one man and one woman. BTW, by fulfilling the same “days of Lot,” gays are actually hurrying up the return of Christ as Judge and helping to make the Bible even more believable!

(Obama and his porn-protecting California friends – including Brown and Pelosi – did NOT approve of this message.)

  10. GREAT Blog! My daughter lives in KC, Mo-having just graduated from IHOPU earlier in May. I believe she was able to support Chic-Fil-A, if not on Aug 1st-NUMEROUS other times over her 4 yrs there:) Alas..we ourselves were not able to support them that day as we have no Chick-Fil-A in our city-or in our state, S.D. (that I know of). Consider that an invitation Chick-Fil-A owners:)! The latest news I’ve heard is that HOBBY LOBBY-a chain of craft stores throughout the mid-west, will be paying a fine of $1.3 MILLION dollars DAILY-for not following the Obama care rule that abortions, and abortion pills be mandatory in their insurance plan they offer to their employee’s!-because it goes against their Christian, Biblically based beliefs. I would encourage everyone who reads this to SUPPORT our Christian businesses-esp those who will stand against the tide of the tsunami like wave flooding against Christian beliefs and more’s in America today! I know I WILL! It is TIME to ask-“Where are you Men of COURAGE?” “Rise UP of MEN of GOD” Thanks to all who are!♥

I DON’T SUPORT SAME SEX MARRIAGES OR ABORTION. I AM A CHRISTIAN AND KNOW ACCORDING TO GOD THEY ARE BOTH WRONG. BUT, AT THE SAME TIME I SEE A DOUBLE STANDARD ON BOTH SIDES. WE AS CHRISTIANS HAVE TO BE SO VERY CAREFUL HOW WE APPOACH THESE ISSUES. WE TO STOP BLAMING OTHERS AND BE MORE OPEN TO TEACH OTHERS IN A LOVING WAY. I FEEL WE NEED TO FIND MORE OPPORTUNITIES TO TEACH OTHERS MORE THAN WE DO. BLAMING MR. OBAMA IS NOT THE ANSWER, BECAUSE HE IS A HUMAN MADE FROM GOD JUST LIKE YOU AND ME. GOD IS MY CREATOR SO THAT’S WHO I FOLLOW. GOD GIVE US A CHOICE TO FOLLOW HIM OR SATAN.MY CHOICE IS GOD. I CAN ONLY TEACH SOMEONE IN A LOVING WAY ABOUT WHAT IS WRONG WITH ABORTION AND SAME SEX MARRIAGE, BUT IN THE END THEY STILL HAVE TO MAKE THEIR OWN DECISION ABOUT. WE AS CHRISTIANS ARE DEMANDED TO GO INTO THE WORLD TO TEACH THE GOSSIPLE, AND PRAY THAT WE CAN BRING A LOST SOUL TO CHRIST, BUT WE CAN’T MAKE THEM DO IT.

    • Faloria,   I’m not really sure what your point is in response to this post.   I think the post was very kind and written in a loving way.  Certainly the quotes from Dan Cathy and Mike Huckabee were spoken in a thoughful and kind manner.   But the most puzzling comment you made was this: “BLAMING MR. OBAMA IS NOT THE ANSWER.”  I went back and reread the post.  I didn’t see one thing in it about blaming Mr. Obama.  In fact, I never even mentioned the President in this post.  I quoted quite a few people, including the Mayor of Boston, and some homosexual proponents, but not Mr. Obama.   I think you read something into this post that, quite frankly, was not there!

      • Faloria Jones

NO YOU DIDN’T BUT OTHERS DID. I AM JUST TIRED OF EVERY TIME THIS SUBJECT COME UP MR. OBAMA’S NAME IS ALWAYS USED NEGATIVE IN SOMEONES COMMENT.

      • Faloria, if you are referring to my comment about ‘Obamacare’ requiring the company’s to pay for the ‘abortion pill’ or as other’s would have it called ‘the day-after pill’-I neither coined the phrase ‘Obamacare’, nor did I write the bill! …and btw, both incident’s are true. I don’t understand what you are objecting to either-since both these terms are mentioned, and called thus nearly daily during MSM reports and broadcasts! If you have an objection to those 2 phrases, perhaps you should take it up w/them… This seems more of a ‘shoot-the-messenger because of the message’ kind of response from you. I am your sister in Christ! I invite you read the Obamacare bill, and the letter posted by the the Green’s-owners and founder’s of Hobby Lobby-just google it. More importantly, I invite you to NOT look at what democrat’s or republican’s are saying! Look unto God for REAL truth…May God Bless You♥

  12. Faloria Jones

Teresa, I DON’T CARE TO. BECAUSE IT’S ALL THE SAME. NEGATIVE. I CAN FIND SOMETHING BETTER TO DO WITH MY TIME, LIKE READING THE BIBLE AND BRING LOST SOULS TO CHRIST.

    • Faloria, By all means, do so then! But then, also do not accuse people of insults & attacks against Obama that you alone, (apparently)-perceive! It is clear from your posts, (to me at least), that you do not wish to look at both sides of the issue-which btw, is NOT about Obama-but about the attack of modern society against the Christian faith. Both Chick-Fil-A and Hobby Lobby have been visciously attacked by MSM story responses, and on internet responses, for merely standing up for THEIR rights to run THEIR OWN businesses as THEY see fit. They attacked no one, just asked for the same rights that those of other faiths, or other business’ receive. I PRAY that you STAND for CHRIST-(infallible), as vigorously as you stand for this human (fallible) man! Stop searching the internet-(which isn’t there in this case) for something to start an argument over, and start searching the Scriptures for what GOD says…the TRUTH may surprise you. Christian’s need to stand UNITED, for Christ! Across all denomination’s, across all political party affiliations, across all border’s, across all race’s! HE ALONE is our HOPE. Don’t think for a moment that just because Obama is our current leader, that i blame him for the mess this country is in. ALL our representatives in Washington, ALL of our past leader’s, indeed ALL of US!-bear responsibility for what we’ve become. As I told you before-I am your sister in Christ! I want for you to stop looking for micro-issues to fault, from a world view, and start looking at things from an ETERNAL view, because that is where our true citizenry lies! PEACE to you Faloria♥ I am not your enemy, nor is anyone else on here…:)
