Broken

Yesterday was “Canada Day.” It’s somewhat equivalent to our “Independence Day” celebrated in the United States on July 4th.

Canada Day celebrates the anniversary of the Canadian Confederation which occurred on July 1, 1867, in which Britain recognized Canada as a “kingdom with its own right.” Informally it is referred to as “Canada’s birthday.”

Like Americans in the USA, Canadians are very proud of their country. Yesterday there were flags flying. Celebrations. Bar-b-ques. Parades. Musical entertainment. And, of course, fireworks. Continue reading →

REFLECTIONS ON AMERICA’S BIRTHDAY

July 4 2015

I’m feeling a bit melancholy on this Saturday morning.

I probably shouldn’t feel this way, but I do. It’s a beautiful beginning to the day. It’s a very pleasant 60 degrees on my back porch. The sun is shining. Birds are chirping. Squirrels are scampering about the woods behind us. The deer are enjoying their morning “salt lick.” And the coffee is good.

What Can Christians Do As America’s Foundations Erode?

Tomorrow is Independence Day–the day we celebrate American’s freedom from Great Britain.  On July 4, 1776, in Philadelphia, 56 courageous men signed the Declaration of Independence.

While the signers held varying religious beliefs, they were believers in God. This grand document is not only a revered part of our history, but the foundation of our republic. The Declaration  has five references to God—two in the first paragraph, one in the middle, and two in the last.  Continue reading →
