Weekly Recap: January 29-February 2

Greeting from Beverly Hills, FL

I have a favor to ask of our regular readers today.

In whatever form you receive ThePreachersWord would you share it with 3 (or more) of your friends?

If you’re receiving this via email, just forward your email to someone who might enjoy this daily blog.  Or if you’re reading from social media, you can share it on a post.  In fact, even if you’re reading directly from this blog site, you can send it to a friend.  We would like to expand our reader base.  And I believe referrals may be the best way to do it.

Thank you in advance.  I appreciate your support.

Jesus Heals the Hurting

My facebook friend and preaching colleague, Doy Moyer, is careful student of the Word and an excellent writer.  Today, without comment, we offer one of his recent facebook posts that has a universal appeal for all our readers.

The late James P. Miller used to advise preacher boys, “When you don’t know what to preach, preach to the hurting.  There’s one on every pew.”  He’s right.  In fact, there may be more than one.  In this spirit, we offer Doy’s thoughtful and scriptural piece. Continue reading

7 Responses To Our Crumbling Moral Foundation

“Religion and good morals are the only solid foundation of public liberty and happiness,” opined one of America’s Founding Fathers, Samuel Adams (1722-1803).

In an age when it seems the moral, ethical, and spiritual foundations all around us are crumbling, the  Psalmist’s question bears repeating and reflecting on.

If the foundations are destroyed,
What can the righteous do?
(Ps. 11:3) Continue reading

Ephesians 2:1-10

Today’s text reminds us of the popular hymn penned by Julia H. Johnston (1849-1919), “Grace Greater Than Our Sin.”

Marvelous grace of our loving Lord,
Grace that exceeds our sin and our guilt!
Yonder on Calvary’s mount out-poured–
There where the blood of the Lamb was spilt {shed}

In Ephesians  2:1-10, Paul takes them (and us) from the depths of despair and Satan’s snare to the heights of greater hope and infinite glory. Continue reading

When Growth is Not Good

Recently I heard my good friend, Steve McAllister, who preaches at Northside Church in Pompano Beach present a lesson on spiritual growth. At the conclusion of his lesson, he quickly made a point that not all growth is good. Then bulleted some passages proving that point.

Coincidently, yesterday’s post was about growth. When I heard Steve’s concluding points, I decided to follow up my post, “Growth is Fundamental” with this idea. Continue reading

Growing is Fundamental

“Growth is a fundamental aspect of life. We begin to grow and develop physically, mentally, and emotionally from the moment we are born,” wrote author, speaker, and host of the podcast Passion Struck, John R. Miles. “As we progress through life, we seek new experiences and challenges that help us grow and develop as individuals.”

In addition to the areas Miles mentioned, God also wants us to grow spiritually. This is necessary to becoming a well rounded person, to achieve your purpose in life, and to reach your full potential.

The Bible says that “Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men” (Lk. 2:52). Continue reading

Greetings from Pompano Beach, Florida

We’re enjoying our annual trip to “Gold Coast” of Southwest Florida.  This is the 6th constitutive year we’ve been blessed to have fellowship with the brethren at the Northside church.  And to renew our association with friends of more than 50 years, Steve and Theresa McAllister.  (Yep, we first met in Kindergarten. Ahem!) Continue reading

Not All Scientists are Evolutionists

Not long ago my Canadian facebook friend, Rob DE Man, posted a quote from the renowned physicist, David Berlinski. It’s from his book “The Devil’s Delusion: Atheism and Its Scientific Pretensions.”

Berlinski, who appeared in Ben Stein’s 2008 documentary, Expelled, which exposed the silencing of educators who questioned the theory of macro evolution, has long been a fierce opponent of the Darwinian theory. Continue reading

“I Thank My Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ”

Recently the Houston Texans defeated the favored Cleveland Browns in the NFL playoffs. Following the game, Texas rookie quarterback C. J. Stroud was interviewed and began with these words:

“First and foremost, I just want to give all glory and praise to my Lord, Jesus Christ.”

Stroud is well known for references regarding his faith during interviews. Last year before the NFL draft, Stroud explained why. Continue reading

Genesis 50:19-21

It may have been one of the most impressive funeral processions of all antiquity. There were chariots and horseman. There were the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt. All of the house of Joseph, and Joseph’s brethren, and his father’s house, except for the small children. Continue reading
