2 Corinthians 9:1-5: Generous Giving Encourages Others

Last year the Washington Post ran a story by Sydney Page about a man named Michael who meant to donate $150 to a charity, but mistakenly gave $15,000.

Michael heard from a neighbor about a GoFundMe site to support a charity helping people in poverty stricken countries. However, after typing 150, he accidently typed two extra zeroes in the “amount” box before removing the cursor to the next field. Continue reading

Are All Religions a Path to God?

“All religions are a path to God,” declared Pope Francis as he spoke to an interfaith youth assembly in a recent visit to Singapore.

Francis’ further added, “If you start to fight: My religion is more important than yours, mine is true and yours isn’t. Where will that lead us?” as reported by a Catholic news outlet Crux.

The Pope then used this analogy. “Each of us has a language to arrive at God. Some are Sikh, Muslim, Hindu, Christian, and they are different paths [to God].” Continue reading

Brotherly Kindness is Fundamental

In an old Bits and Pieces magazine the story is told of an old Texas woman named Mamie Adams. She always went to a branch post office in her town because the postal employees there were kind and friendly.

One year just before Christmas Mamie went there to buy stamps and the lines were particularly long. Someone pointed out that there was no need to wait in line because there was a stamp machine in the lobby. “I know,” said Mamie, ‘but the machine won’t ask me about my arthritis.” Continue reading

Greeting from Beverly Hills, FL

We’re home after a wonderful week with the brethren in Huntington Beach, California. It was good to be with Joe Griffin, who preaches for the Huntington Beach Church and his wife Debbie.  We not only  made new friends, but were able to meet some of our readers of ThePreachersWord and see some other friends of bygone days visiting from other congregations.  We feel blessed as we continue to travel and minister in the Word as the opportunities are offered. 2 Corinthians 4:1-6: Motives for Ministry

According to educator Edes Gilbert, getting a good education for their children is not the only factor motivating some of today’s parents to enroll their children in elite schools.

During her 15 years as headmistress of Spence, a prestigious Upper East Side girls school in New York City, Ms. Gilbert has seen an increasing number of parents using their children’s education for their own benefit. Continue reading

Godliness is Fundamental

One Sunday on their way home from worship services, little Ella turned to her mother and said, “Mommy, the preacher’s sermon this morning confused me.”

“Oh, why is that?” the mother asked.

“Well,” replied Ella, “He said that God is bigger than we are. Is that true?”

“Yes, Ella, that’s right.”

“But he also said that God lives in us. Is that true, Mommy?” Continue reading

Weekly Recap: September 9-13

Greetings from Beverly Hills, FL

Today Norma Jean and I are leaving for Huntington Beach, California, where I will be preaching in a meeting beginning tomorrow, September 15th through Wednesday the 18th.  It’s our first time to preach for this congregation.  So we are looking forward to meeting the brethren and reconnecting with friends from Kansas City days, Joe and Debra Griffin.

The other day at church a brother quipped to me, “You’re the busiest retired preacher I know.”  Well,  I guess it depends on how you define “retirement.”  Since 2018 we have not been tied down to local church work, but are continuing to preach, teach, write and travel as opportunities are provided.  We are blessed.
