“Could it be that with the advent of social media some verses suddenly became written in invisible ink or perhaps reached an expiration date?” Asked my friend and preaching colleague Don Truex on his facebook page. Continue reading
Men are Men and Women are Women
On Tuesday The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act to bar men who identify as women from completing in women’s athletic competition.
That evening Speaker Mike Johnson addressed reporters at a press conference and began saying “We know from Scripture and from nature that men are men and women are women and men cannot become women.” He pointed out that differences between the sexes goes back to God’s creation of Adam and Eve. Psalm 23: #2 I Shall Not Want
Students in a Bible class were once asked to memorize Psalm 23. One little girl stood up and began “The Lord is my Shepherd.” Then she paused, as her mind went blank.
Quickly, she smiled and blurted out, “And that’s all I want.” Continue reading

Can You Imagine?
Last week we watched the funeral service of President Jimmy Carter. It was, as expected, an impressive service with its pomp and ceremony reserved for a former United States President.
The speakers included Steve Ford, son of former President Gerald Ford, and Ted Mondel, son of former Vice President Walter Mondale, with both reading remarks written by their fathers honoring President Carter. Of course, President Biden also spoke. Continue reading

2025 Theme: Be Zealous
David McCullough, in his book Mornings on Horseback, tells this story about Teddy Roosevelt when he was a kid.
Roosevelt’s mother, Martha, learned that he was afraid to set foot inside the building where they worshiped. He admitted that he was terrified of something called “zeal.” He thought it was crouched in the dark corners of the building ready to jump out at him. Continue reading

Don’t Be A Quitter
“I watched this Apple commercial over the holidays, and you may have seen it. It features a girl going out for a run on January 1st when it’s snowing,” posted Jay Ferguson on his blog.
“She’s clearly miserable, out-of-shape, wearing a pair of sweats that look like they belonged to your old middle school gym coach, devoid of the right gear. But, she does have an Apple Watch, which–spoiler alert–allows her to run all year long, progressively faster and in progressively better gear.” Continue reading

Reflections on Recent Snow Falls
The recent snow storm named Blair dumped incredible amounts of snow stretching across the Midwest from Kansas into the Ohio Valley.
Norma Jean and I watched the news accounts from the warmth of our Florida family room reminiscing about places where we’ve lived and experienced snow storms.
Our first winter in Ohio back in 1970 was Norma’s very first taste of snow. Living in Hillsboro and Kettering we saw snow. Lots of snow. It was also Norma’s first exposure to driving in snow that landed her in a ditch on a country road. Continue reading

Psalm 23: #1 The Lord is My Shepherd
In his book, God’s Psychiatry, Charles L. Allen tells about a businessman who came to him for advice.
The businessman was talented, successful, and had risen to be chosen as president of his company. “Yet, along the way,” Allen wrote, “he had left out something, and one of the things he did not achieve is happiness.” Allen observed that he was a nervous, tense, worried, and a sick man. Last Fall at the annual Sing! Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, author and minister Alistair Begg sounded a warning against the “consumer worship” mindset in many churches.
Begg challenged attendees, including preachers, pastors, and church leaders to return to a “serious engagement with the Bible.” Continue reading
