Never Speak Evil

“Never speak evil,” wrote Florida College professor Doy Moyer in a January facebook post.

While we have touched on this topic in previous posts, it appears that the reminder and exhortation is continually needed. Consider carefully Doy’s warning and the subsequent comments. Continue reading

Psalm 23–#5 The Good Shepherd Restores

“He restores my soul”

Have you ever heard of a “cast sheep”? Or a “cast down sheep”? I hadn’t either until I studied Psalm 23. Phillip Keller explains it in his book A Shepherd Looks at the 23rd Psalm.

“Cast sheep” is an old English expression for a sheep that has turned over on its back and cannot get up by itself. Keller describes it this way. Continue reading

Do You Know The Lord?

“How is it that you know Christ in such a personal way and I don’t?” A student asked his Bible professor.

“Maybe you only know Jesus as the forgiver of your sins,” replied the prof.

This story told by Bill Hybels in his book, The God You’re Looking For, continued as the professor explained what it meant to enjoy a relationship with the Lord. Continue reading

Presidents Day and the Bible

“It is impossible to rightly govern without God and the Bible,” once affirmed our first President George Washington.

In his farewell address, September 19, 1796, Washington said, “The propitious smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of right and order which Heaven itself has ordained…Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports.” Continue reading

Two men barked at each other about a shove that might or might not have been intentional. A pregnant woman got on, and nobody offered her a seat. Rage was in the air; no mercy would be found here.,” posted journalist and author Elizabeth Gilbert on her facebook page. Continue reading

The Right Gift

A woman woke up one morning, turned to her husband and said, “Honey, I just had a dream that you bought me a new gold necklace. What do you think it means?”

He answered, “I don’t know, but Valentine’s Day is coming soon. Then you’ll know.”

A few nights later, she again woke up after having a dream. She said, “This time, I dreamed you gave me a pearl necklace. What do you think it means?” Continue reading

Psalm 23–#4 Still Waters

“He leads me beside the still waters.”

Peace. Calm. Rest. Tranquility. These are words that embody the imagery of “still waters.”

As noted in earlier posts, sheep, by their very nature, are very timid and fearful animals. They are not good swimmers. So, they are afraid of rushing water. Of course, if you were trying to swim wearing a heavy wool coat, you’d probably be a bit fearful as well. Continue reading

Make a Friend. Be a Friend.

Today, February 11th is “Make a Friend Day” according to “Your Ultimate Guide to 2025 Wacky, Fun and Weird Holidays”

Their website observes that “Making new friends can help people broaden their horizons and learn about different cultures and parts of the society. Research has shown that people with diverse group of friends are more tolerant, open to new ideas, and empathetic than people who have a small or a non-diverse group of friends.” Continue reading
