Overcoming Anxiety Through Biblical Principles

“Anxiety is a common emotional response to stress, uncertainty, or fear of the future.”

We all feel and experience anxious moments in various situations and circumstances of life. Often our anxiety surfaces not so much from “thinking about the future but from wanting to control it,” as Hugh Prather observed. Continue reading

Fueling Your Zeal By Sharing Your Faith

Years ago a family from Mississippi visited the congregation where I was preaching. They brought with see them his mother, Evelyn, who had recently retired to Florida. Evelyn’s son asked me if I would visit his mother, who was not a Christian, and try to secure a Bible study with her. Continue reading

Never Too Old

Steve Rudd is a friend of mine and preaching colleague in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

Steve’s a unique fellow with a variety of skills and interests including his work in archaeology which takes him on annual excavation trips to Israel. Just prior to leaving for a 6 week “dig,” Steve received a call from his 92-year-old Mom, which Steve said left him at a “lost for words,” which is unusual for him.

4 Ways the Attitude of Entitlement Violates Bible Principles

I recently read a story about a college graduate who was hired at a marketing firm in an entry-level position. Despite being new, he believed he should be immediately assigned to high-profile clients and creative leadership roles, saying his degree from a top school “should count for something.” Continue reading

Acts 20:7–First Day Focus

My friend, preaching colleague, and fellow blogger, Roger Shouse, is fond of saying, “Sunday is the best day of the week.”

He often speaks in his blogs about how special Sunday is to him and how much he looks forward to it. In one post, he gushed, “I love Sundays.”

Warren Buffett, ranked as the 5th richest man in the world by Forbes with an estimated $168 billion, announced Saturday at a shareholders meeting that he is retiring as the CEO of Berkshire-Hathaway.

The 94-old investor, known as the “Oracle of Omaha” because of his “exceptional investment acumen and ability to predict market trends,” has pledged to give away 99.5% of wealth either during his lifetime or after his death through a trust overseen by his children. Continue reading

Fueling Your Zeal By Discipleship

Michael Jinkins tells a story about Clarence Jordan, author of the “Cotton Patch” New Testament translation. Jordan was the founder of the interracial Koinonia farm in Americus, Georgia, and suffered ridicule, threats, and finally his buildings burned in protest to his work. Undaunted, he rebuilt and continued his ministry. Continue reading

Weekly Recap; April 28-May 2

Greetings from the Great Smoky Mountains

Norma Jean and I are enjoying one of our special places to visit this week.  The beauty, serenity, and majesty of the mountains reminds us of God’s greatness.  And, it’s just good for the soul.

Additionally, we always enjoy worship with the brethren in Cosby, an easy and picturesque 20 minute drive from Gatlinburg, where I’m privileged to preach whenever we visit. (Yes, I’m preaching at Cosby tomorrow).  If you’re ever in the Smokies, we recommend you worship with these fine folks. Continue reading
