When Evil Shadows Our World

Why?

Yesterday’s shocking assassination of conservative political activist Charlie Kirk left pundits and reporters searching for answers. Many are asking, “Why?” Others wonder out loud, “What is wrong with our country?” “With our world?” “And with the political rancor that divides our country? Continue reading

1 Corinthians 15:58–Living in the Power of the Resurrection

As football begins, I’m reminded of the story of Johnny, who loved playing sandlot football, but was just a scrawny, little kid and a bench warmer on his high school team.

Johnny’s chance came when the first-string quarterback broke his ankle, and he became a starter. His dream was to play college football at Notre Dame, but he was rejected. The University of Pittsburgh offered him a scholarship, but he failed the entrance exam. Finally, the University of Louisville offered him a scholarship. Continue reading

7 Secrets of Life Through the Lens of Scripture

My friend and fellow Rotarian, John Grant, publishes a weekly email entitled “Thoughts on Life.” It’s a collection of articles, inspirational stories, motivational quotes, and various lists for living.

Last week, John’s email contained a short, simple list called “7 Secrets of Life.” I’m not sure if this is John’s personal list or from an unknown author. Nevertheless, what struck me was that this practical wisdom has a basis in God’s Word. Continue reading

Many of you likely have a can of WD-40 in your home. My Dad used it often to penetrate tight bolts and squeaky hinges, as well as for lubrication.

But, do you know what WD-40 stands for? Continue reading

Weekly Recap: September 1-5

Greetings from Beverly Hills, FL

It’s good to be home.  At least for a short time before we began Fall meetings and out-of-state preaching appointments.

Several have inquired about  Norma Jean’s health.  She is continuing to make progress since her surgery on June 9.  At her last appointment, the surgeon said it really takes about 180 days for your body to return to “normal” after the type of surgery she had.  Of course, with Parkinson’s, that’s only a guess and somewhat subjective.  She had a good appointment with her neurologist the other day, with a slight tweak to her medications.  We know the nature of PD, so we’re blessed to enjoy each day and the relative “good health” she has. Do Good and Share: A Life that Delights the Lord

Some of the stories we read on Facebook, although heartwarming and touching, are probably fictional.

However, this story, shared by my Facebook friend and preaching colleague, Tommy Peeler, really happened. When he posted it, he said the person who shared it with him didn’t want her identity revealed.

So, in Tommy’s words, here’s what happened. Continue reading

Reputation Matters: The Value of a Good Name

On this day, September 4, 1957, Ford Motor Company introduced its much-ballyhooed new model, the Edsel.

The Edsel was a pet project of Henry Ford II, the President and CEO of Ford, who named the model after his son, Edsel, who died in 1949 at the age of 49. Continue reading

1 Corinthians 11: 17-34–How To Look At The Lord’s Supper

“The value of any experience depends upon the condition of the heart of those who participate,” observed Warren Wiersbe.

For example, suppose I have a meeting in the Dallas area where my friend Mark preaches. Soon after I arrive, he shares with great excitement that he has two tickets to a Texas Rangers game that evening. Continue reading

Act in Love Serving One Another

I have an extra day off this week,” Carl told his wife as he walked into the kitchen. I think I’ll use it to fix Donna’s bike and then take Larry on that museum trip he’s been talking about.”

“Fixing a bike and visiting a museum hardly sound like exciting ways to spend a day off,” his wife replied. Continue reading

“Unprecedented numbers of Americans are walking away from their jobs, rethinking their routines and breaking away from traditional expectations,” wrote author and researcher Bruce Feiler in “The New Rules of Success in a Post-Career World.”
