Weekly Recap: July 7-11

Greetings from Welland, Ontario, Canada

Our annual summer trip to Canada may come as a surprise to some of you given Norma’s recent surgery and other health issues.  However, her surgeon gave us her blessing if Norma felt like traveling.  So, here we are.  Howbeit, we did travel at a slower pace, taking 4 days and giving Norma plenty of time to rest each evening and without an early morning start. That’s A Good One!

My facebook page is connected to a number of groups which are mostly related to spiritual growth and Bible teaching. But one group is simply called “Christians who enjoy good clean jokes.”

Taking a break from all the serious issues in the world and church, I decided on this facebook Friday to share a bit a of humor from that page. Several of these have a spiritual application. But I will forgo the lessons learned and let you use in it your own teaching. Or just enjoy it, and delight in a good laugh. Continue reading

Churches, Preachers, and Politics

On Monday the IRS rescinded a 1954 ruling which prohibited churches from endorsing political candidates with the threat of losing their tax-exempt status.

While the ruling was rarely enforced, Politico hailed this as a move that was a major win for evangelical groups. Continue reading

Titus 3:14–Helping Others

He’s being hailed as an American hero by Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem.

U. S. Coast Guard rescue swimmer, Scott Ruskan, was called upon to help during the torrential flood in Kerrville, Texas, during the 4th of July holiday.

It was the first rescue mission of his career and he was sent to Camp Mystic, where he was the first Coast Guard officer on the scene. In a GMA interview Ruskan said there were over 200 children who were all scared, terrified, cold, having probably the worst day of their lives.” Continue reading

Calling on the Name of the Lord

Sunday I enjoyed a rare break from the pulpit and heard a fine lesson by Michael Lusk entitled “Calling on the Name of the Lord,” which is the inspiration of today’s post.

In Romans 10:13 the apostle Paul boldly proclaims, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

But what does this mean? What is involved? And how do we call? Continue reading

When the Fire Fades: The Spiritual Danger of Isolation”

There’s an old story about a preacher visiting a member of his congregation who had become distant from the church-family and absent from the worship assemblies.

It was a cool evening and the man was sitting by a fire place. After the initial greetings, the man confided in the preacher that he felt disconnected from the church, but insisted that he could be a good Christian on his own. Continue reading

Anything Important Happening Today?

“Nothing of importance happened today,” wrote King George III in his diary on July 4, 1776.

This ironic quote has been widely circulated in books, blogs, and even sermons illustrating that significant events may occur about which we’re unaware. I’ve probably used it myself in bygone days. Continue reading

2 Corinthians 5:7- Walking By Faith

I recently read that an African impala can jump to a height of over 10 feet and cover a distance of greater than 30 feet. Yet these magnificent creatures can be kept in an enclosure in any zoo with a 3-foot wall.

Why? Continue reading
