Loving Like Jesus Loved

Sunday, we were blessed to hear an excellent sermon by David Curry on “Loving One Another.” (Incidentally, it was great to see his 94-year-old father, Melvin, who was one of my Bible professors at Florida College.)

After explaining and illustrating the four Greek words for love and the basis for the command to “love one another.” David shared Jesus’ admonition from John 13:34-35. Continue reading

Pursue God with Your Whole Heart

“The human heart has so many crannies where vanity hides, so many holes where falsehood lurks,” once lamented John Calvin, “that it is difficult to be persuaded of the simple truth that nothing is more profitable than the wholehearted pursuit of God.”

To be zealous and ignite our spiritual passion, it must be rooted in pursuit of and in a relationship with God.” Continue reading

Weekly Recap: August 11-15

Greetings from Beverly Hills, FL

Yup.  We’re home.  It took us all week, but we’re back in Florida.  Just in time for the heart of hurricane season!

During the week, we’ve stayed in three different Hilton properties. We’re thankful for early morning coffee, comfortable lobbies, and internet access that allows us to publish while we travel.  These are conveniences that we often overlook. But they make a difference. And make life easier. Continue reading

A Cool Car Does Not Make You Cool!

My facebook friend, preaching colleague, and fellow Hoosier, Max Dawson is a “car guy.”

Max used to have a column entitled “Pontiacs, Points, and Proverbs.” He used stories about cars to make a spiritual application. Here’s a past post from a year ago with an important point to consider without any editorial comment. Continue reading

Why? Continue reading

Psalm 19:14–Watching the Words of Your Heart

I remember as a kid, during summer vacation, going down to the country, as we say in Indiana. That meant Kentucky. It meant staying with my Papaw and Granny Key in Grayson County.

They didn’t have indoor plumbing or air-conditioning, but we never minded. We had a ball. One of the unique experiences for a kid was seeing how they drew water from a well. They lowered a bucket down into the well, which drew its water from an underground spring. That water was cold, pure, and better tasting than city water. Continue reading

Are You Ghostworking?

Apparently, the grind of “Working 9 to 5″ is more than a catchy tune by Dolly Parton or a funny movie.

Today’s workers are feeling the stress and strain of the workday, and more than half admit to “ghostworking.” Continue reading

“PASSION: The Heartbeat of Spiritual Zeal”

The Bookseller magazine compiles a shortlist of titles nominated by readers and Twitter users with the oddest title of the year.

The rules stipulate that the book must be non-fiction, of serious intent, unintentionally odd, and not created to be deliberately humorous. One year. The winner was “Highlights in the History of Concrete.” Continue reading

Loneliness.

“Loneliness is not simply being alone — it is that profound ache of feeling like no one really cares.”

The above quote from Indian actress Neena Gupta appeared on my Facebook notifications from the page “Love is an Emotion of Strong Affection.” Continue reading
