A Cool Car Does Not Make You Cool!

My facebook friend, preaching colleague, and fellow Hoosier, Max Dawson is a “car guy.”

Max used to have a column entitled “Pontiacs, Points, and Proverbs.” He used stories about cars to make a spiritual application. Here’s a past post from a year ago with an important point to consider without any editorial comment. Continue reading

Emulating the Heart of David

“Nobodies, nobody noticed… A little boy named David, whom nobody noticed… except God,” wrote Chuck Swindoll in his Reflections on David.

Yet, David rose to be the greatest of Israel’s kings, a prolific writer of Psalms, and a key figure in the ancestry of the Messiah.

Why? Continue reading

Psalm 19:14–Watching the Words of Your Heart

I remember as a kid, during summer vacation, going down to the country, as we say in Indiana. That meant Kentucky. It meant staying with my Papaw and Granny Key in Grayson County.

They didn’t have indoor plumbing or air-conditioning, but we never minded. We had a ball. One of the unique experiences for a kid was seeing how they drew water from a well. They lowered a bucket down into the well, which drew its water from an underground spring. That water was cold, pure, and better tasting than city water. Continue reading

Are You Ghostworking?

Apparently, the grind of “Working 9 to 5″ is more than a catchy tune by Dolly Parton or a funny movie.

Today’s workers are feeling the stress and strain of the workday, and more than half admit to “ghostworking.” Continue reading

“PASSION: The Heartbeat of Spiritual Zeal”

The Bookseller magazine compiles a shortlist of titles nominated by readers and Twitter users with the oddest title of the year.

The rules stipulate that the book must be non-fiction, of serious intent, unintentionally odd, and not created to be deliberately humorous. One year. The winner was “Highlights in the History of Concrete.” Continue reading

Loneliness.

“Loneliness is not simply being alone — it is that profound ache of feeling like no one really cares.”

The above quote from Indian actress Neena Gupta appeared on my Facebook notifications from the page “Love is an Emotion of Strong Affection.” Continue reading

Be a Lighthouse for The Lord

Yesterday, Norma Jean and I drove over to St. Catharines, Ontario, and saw the Port Dalhousie Range Lighthouses. There are two lighthouses on this site, both built in the late 1800s.

Now imagine this. Today, August 7th, is National Lighthouse Day. Yep. That’s a thing, according to the holiday calendar of unusual holidays and celebrations. Ironic, eh? Continue reading

Matthew 19:3-6: Marriage in the Beginning

This month, Norma Jean and I will celebrate our 57th wedding anniversary.

We married at a time when divorce rates were increasing, due to a change of laws that introduced no-fault divorce and a shift in moral values. The divorce rate peaked at about 50%. In recent years, the number has decreased slightly and is now approximately 42%. Continue reading

Post #4000: To God Be the Glory

On January 1, 2012, in Okeechobee, Florida, from the winter home of my Uncle, David Key, we launched ThePreachersWord. The first post, early that morning, was “Preaching through Blogging.” Later that day, I sent out a second post, “Beginning Again,” celebrating the new year.

Now, here we are 13 years and 7 months later, still posting. WordPress tells me that today is a significant milestone. It is post #4000. So, pardon a bit of reflection and celebration today. Continue reading
