Eagles Push

In his book, with the captivating title, “Even Eagles Need A Push,” Dave McNally tells about a man being awakened one night with a loud knock at the door. He rolls over and looks at his clock. It’s 3:30 AM!

“I’m not getting out of bed at this time,” he thinks, and rolls over. Then, a louder knock follows.

“Aren’t you going to answer that?” whispers his wife.

So he drags himself out of bed, and goes downstairs. He opens the door and there is a man standing at the door. It doesn’t take him long to realize the man is drunk.

Chick-fil-A. Christianity. And Bigotry.

How did I miss this insightful essay?

Back in April, the New Yorker published a piece by freelance writer Dan Piepenbring entitled “Chick-fil-A’s Creepy Infiltration of New York City.” While the article exposes the evils of fast foods, their advertising slogan “Eat Mor Chikin,” and his disapproval of opening their stores in the Big Apple, the writer seems more upset about the values of the founder, the late S. Truett Cathy, his son, Dan, the current CEO, and the conservative culture of the Corporation.

Piepenbring’s essay includes these complaints “The brand’s arrival here feels like an infiltration, in no small part because of its pervasive Christian traditionalism.” Continue reading

Lest We Forget

Seventeen years ago we were living in Spring Hill, TN. And I was preaching for the Jackson Heights church in Columbia. As I was preparing to leave for the office Norma Jean hollered for me to come into the family room. “A plane has hit one of the twin towers,” she yelled in disbelief.

Like millions of Americans we were stunned as we watched another plane hit the 2nd tower. Then the Pentagon was hit. Soon there was a report of the crash in PA. Later we learned of the heroism that prevented another catastrophic strike.

That day I did not go to the office. Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Christ–The Power of God

Cross.Tomb.Darkness.Light

Do You not know that I have power to crucify You, and power to release You?”Pontus Pilate asked Jesus at His trial.

The power in Jesus’ day resided in Rome. Everyone knew it. Their empirical rule reached across the known world. The power was evident in their army. Their outposts of culture. Their massive building programs. Their roads. And, of course, their ruler. He was Pontifex Maximus.

Blessing One Another

In a Peanuts cartoon Lucy demanded that Linus change the TV channel.  “What makes you think you can walk right in here and take over?  asks Linus  “These five fingers,” says Lucy.  “Individually they’re nothing but when I curl them together like this into a single fist they form a weapon that is terrible to behold.”

4 Lessons Learned from the Titanic

1932 --- Sinking of the Titanic by Willy Stoewer --- Image by © Bettmann/CORBIS

“God himself could not sink this ship,” replied a deck hand as Sylvia Caldwell marveled at the majesty of the great Titanic and wondered aloud if it really was unsinkable as advertised.

Talk about famous last words!

It was on this day 104 years ago, April 15, 1912, that the “Unsinkable Ship” sank in the icy waters of the North Atlantic after hitting an iceberg late on the 14th.  1517 people died in that disaster.

It wasn’t easy for 59-year-old Margie White to ask her husband, Dick, for a divorce after 37 years of marriage.

“It really was the most courageous thing that I had to do,” she said.

Making Known the “Unknown God”

Yesterday Norma Jean and I spent the morning touring the area of the  Areopagus and  The Parthenon, where the virgin goddess Athena was worshiped. Previously I had only seen pictures and visited the Athens of the south, Nashville, Tennesse and seen its replica.

It is amazing to see the actual Parthenon, built between 447 and 438 B.C. As I looked across to Areopagus Hill, I thought about the apostle Paul’s visit to this same city as recorded by Luke in Acts 17. Continue reading

Word of the Week: Selfless

Martin and Diedre Bobgan in their book, How To Counsel From Scripture, tell of a fascinating study dealing with the principle of the Golden Rule. It was conducted by Bernard Rimland, director of the Institute for Child Behavior Research.

“The happiest people,” Rimland concluded “are those who help others.” Continue reading

Great Verses of the Bible: Mark 10:14

This week I’m participating in the Vacation Bible School with the Wellandport Church teaching the adult class.

I’m teaching, but I think I’m the one receiving the most benefit. Not just from the adults in my class. But from the children. They are excited. They sing at the top of their lungs. And proudly show their pictures after class.

I love VBS. It reinforces the value of children. The need to teach them. And to provide spiritual direction for their lives. Continue reading
