Admonish One Another

Howard Hendricks tells the story in Footprints of a young man studying to be a minister. He was very talented, but was “riding rather than building on his background.” Toward the end of school year a caring professor called him into his office.

“Bill, I’m disappointed in you,” the professor kindly said.

“Really, Prof, why?” Continue reading

Belonging To One Another

Last night we concluded a meeting with the brethren in Trenton, Florida. It has been a wonderful four days of fellowship with some of the finest folks you’d ever meet.

The church is served by four spiritual shepherds, John Frazier, Kent Heaton, Billy Mikell, and Freddie Summers who are truly servant leaders. Everritt Heaton, is a dedicated young man who serves as an evangelist with a wonderful family to support him. Kent works along side Everritt in a special teaching role. Continue reading

When We Rightly Regard One Another

This week we are attending the annual Florida College Lectures. And while we are profiting from the lessons, we are enjoying the fellowship and renewing our friendship with so many from bygone years.

In fact the Wednesday morning lectures, actually addressed the importance of our relationships with one another. As Bible Chair Jason Longstreth enunciated in the book the Wednesday lectures will be focused on “our fellowship in the gospel.” The theme, “A Life Worthy of the Gospel, will be “explored through the lens of humility, unity, relationships and correction.” Continue reading

Comfort One Another

A British evangelist, Warner Pidgeon, relates a story that occurred during the reign of Queen Victoria.

The Queen heard that the wife of a common laborer had lost her baby. Having experienced deep sorrow herself, she felt moved to express her sympathy. So she called on the bereaved woman one day and spent some time with her. After she left, the neighbors were curious, “What did the Queen say? They asked. Continue reading

Let’s Encourage One Another To Keep Climbing

Norma Jean and I are currently enjoying some post-meeting R & R in the Smoky Mountains.  Yesterday was a gorgeous crisp fall day. Sunny.  Clear.  And perfect for a drive to higher elevations and some walking.

Clingman’s Dome was our destination.  At 6643 feet, it’s the highest mountain in the Smokies.  From the observation tower, you get an amazing 360-degree panoramic view of the mountains. And on a clear day, like yesterday, you can see 7 states and over 100 miles. Continue reading

Encourage One Another

How long can you stand barefooted in a bucket of ice water?  Hadn’t thought about it, had you?  Well, believe it or not, a psychological group conducted an experiment several years ago using that very technique to measure people’s capacity to endure pain. They discovered one factor that caused people to stand in the ice water twice as long as others.  Can you guess what it was? Encouragement.  When another person was present during the experiment to lend support and give encouragement, the sufferers were able to endure pain much longer than those who had to suffer alone.

 Encouragement is Important Continue reading

In a Peanuts cartoon Lucy demanded that Linus change the TV channel.  “What makes you think you can walk right in here and take over?  asks Linus  “These five fingers,” says Lucy.  “Individually they’re nothing but when I curl them together like this into a single fist they form a weapon that is terrible to behold.” Continue reading
