During the past three weeks in Kansas City, we’ve met a lot of new people. Especially those in our church family at Hickman Mills. As you to get to know people, and build relationships, one of the first questions often asked is “Where do you work?” Sometimes we simply ask, “What do you do?” And it is understood that you asking about their job, profession or business. IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Turning Resistance into Commitment
Alan Smith tells the story that during a confrontation between Malaysia and Indonesia in 1964, a group of Gurkhas from Nepal were asked if they would be willing to jump from transport planes into combat if the need arose. The Gurkhas had the right to turn down the request because they had never been trained as paratroopers. Continue reading

How To Be Last and Finish First
“It’s been crazy. I can’t understand why everyone wants to talk to me,” said Meghan Vogel. “It’s strange to have people telling me that this was such a powerful act of kindness and using words like ‘humanity.’ It’s weird. I don’t consider myself a hero. I just did what I knew was right and what I was supposed to do.”
So, what did Meghan do that made her an overnight media sensation?

Do You Need Power Washing?
Today I had my lanai and screens power washed. I watched in amazement as the screens had that film of mildew, dust and dirt washed off. What a difference. This was something I knew that I needed done, but didn’t realize how badly it was needed. Continue reading

Did Jesus Pay Taxes?
Is it just me, or does it seem like Christians grumble a lot about paying taxes?
With recent news accounts about government waste, extravagant trips and questionable expenditures of our tax money, it does make paying taxes a bit distasteful at times.
But what would Jesus do? Did Jesus pay taxes? Continue reading

The Cross of Discipleship
The following are actual responses from comment cards given to the staff at Bridger Wilderness Area National Forest in Wyoming.
◆Trails need to be reconstructed. Please avoid building trails that go uphill.
◆Trails need to be wider so people can walk holding hands
◆Too many bugs and leeches and spiders and spider webs. Please spray the wilderness to rid the areas of these pests.
◆Please pave the trails.
◆Chair lifts need to be in some places so that we can get to wonderful views without having to hike to them. Continue reading

Are You Gettin’ Better?
Baseball has begun. So it must be Spring! And how about those Tampa Bay Rays beginning the season with a 3-0 sweep of the Yankees?!
One of my favorite baseball stories involves famed St. Louis Cardinal pitcher, Dizzy Dean, a member of the so-called “gas-house gang.” In 1934 Dizzy had a 30-7 record. He led the league in strike-outs. Led the league in shutouts. And won two games in the World Series, including the deciding seventh game to beat the Detroit Tigers. He was named MVP in 1934.
