1 Corinthians 10:1-13

Warren Wiersbe tells the story about a preacher who presented a sermon series entitled “The Sins of the Saints.”

Apparently the sermons “offended” the sensibilities of a sister who strongly disapproved of the series. “After all, she told the preacher, “sin in the life of a Christian is different from sin in the life of an unsaved person.” Continue reading

The Blessing of Adoption

Little Jocelyn’s first grade class was talking about adoption. Excitedly, she raised her hand and said, “I know all about adoption because I’m adopted!”

“What does it mean to be adopted?” asked the teacher.

“It means,” said Jocelyn, “that you grew in your mother’s heart instead of her tummy.” Continue reading

Are You Running From God?

One of joys of coming to the Smoky Mountains is being with our friends Olie and Mary Williamson.

Olie is 90 years young. In addition to the rental business he runs, Olie teaches a Bible class every Sunday morning and Wednesday night. Preaches every Sunday morning, unless he can corral a guest speaker, like yours truly. Plays golf most every week. And writes a weekly column for the Newport Plain Talk newspaper.

In a recent column, Olie recounted an incident that occurred in 1946. Continue reading

When the Ordinary Becomes Extraordinary

Blogger and author Kent Nerburn relates this touching and unforgettable story that he claims actually occurred when he was driving a cab for a living in Minneapolis.

I was responding to a call from a small brick fourplex in a quiet part of town. I assumed I was being sent to pick up some partiers, or someone who had just had a fight with a lover, or someone going off to an early shift at some factory for the industrial part of town.

When I arrived at the address, the building was dark except for a single light in a ground-floor window. Continue reading

“Jesus Was Not Crucified on a Gucci Cross”

Candace Cameron Bure, the former Hallmark Movie Actress who is now with The Great American Family network, and known for her faith promoted a video to her Instagram followers on Sunday.

The video is a young girl, identified as Cherry Paul Ede, quoting a Fragile Dogubo poem. It has been shared on African social media with over a million views.

“I don’t know who needs to hear this, but Jesus was not crucified on a Gucci cross,” she said. “He didn’t have on a crown of Versace thorns or Nike shoes on his feet when the nails pierced through. There was nothing bougie about Calvary. That old raggedy wooden cross wasn’t even befitting to hold the carpenter’s son, but there our God hung, held on by His love for us, by His love for all. Do You Have a Target on Your Back?

In a recent Op-Ed for The Christian Post, Michael Brown, an author, radio host and Christian apologist, told about an occasion several years ago of offering to help an organization with whom he had worked in the past.

The group liked Brown’s work. They agreed with his values and positions on issues. And he was willing to offer his expertise without regard to compensation. However, they never accepted his offer. Continue reading

Vanna’s Marriage Advice

In a recent post on yahoolife, Wheel of Fortune, co-host Vanna White offers her thoughts on fashion, aging, and exercise.

Vanna joked that it’s “depressing” to her how much she’s aged since beginning work on the Wheel 40 years ago. In listening to the interview, Vanna’s self description as “that country girl…simple and comfortable and not glammed out all the time” seemed natural and genuine. During the interview she shared her views on marriage and the advice she gives her two children, now in their twenties. Continue reading

Are You Prepared?

“Hurricane Ian’s uncertain path has all of us preparing” read a CNN headline Monday morning after the National Hurricane Center officially upgraded Ian from a tropical storm to a category 1 hurricane. This morning Ian is a powerful category 3  hurricane as it moves over Western Cuba and predicted to reach a category 4.  And appears to be barreling toward Tampa Bay.

Friday’s List To Live By #101

Our list this week is adapted from Perry Hall’s excellent book, Grace Does That?

Perry affirms that to truly understand grace, we must understand that Jesus must have first place in our lives. That “there is no one above Him, no one more important.”

So, if we are to glorify God and to walk worthily of the Lord, then it should be apparent that Jesus is supreme in our lives. Continue reading

Remember Who You Are

I don’t remember when I first heard it. But I remember who said it. And where I heard it.

Dee Bowman was preaching in a gospel meeting where I was located. In the course of his sermon on Christian Living, he related advice that he gave to his son, Russ, when he was a teenager and would leave the house with his friends. Continue reading
