Jesus Heals the Hurting

My facebook friend and preaching colleague, Doy Moyer, is careful student of the Word and an excellent writer.  Today, without comment, we offer one of his recent facebook posts that has a universal appeal for all our readers.

The late James P. Miller used to advise preacher boys, “When you don’t know what to preach, preach to the hurting.  There’s one on every pew.”  He’s right.  In fact, there may be more than one.  In this spirit, we offer Doy’s thoughtful and scriptural piece. Continue reading

When Growth is Not Good

Recently I heard my good friend, Steve McAllister, who preaches at Northside Church in Pompano Beach present a lesson on spiritual growth. At the conclusion of his lesson, he quickly made a point that not all growth is good. Then bulleted some passages proving that point.

Coincidently, yesterday’s post was about growth. When I heard Steve’s concluding points, I decided to follow up my post, “Growth is Fundamental” with this idea. Continue reading

Weekly Recap: January 22-26

Greetings from Pompano Beach, Florida

We’re enjoying our annual trip to “Gold Coast” of Southwest Florida.  This is the 6th constitutive year we’ve been blessed to have fellowship with the brethren at the Northside church.  And to renew our association with friends of more than 50 years, Steve and Theresa McAllister.  (Yep, we first met in Kindergarten. Ahem!) Continue reading

Imbibing the Character of Christ

Jonathan Roumie is the actor who plays Jesus in the popular Biblical drama “The Chosen.”

In interviews with the New Yorker and the Christian Post, Roumine relates how he was struggling to “make ends meet,” before he shot to fame portraying Jesus. At times, he said that he didn’t know where his next meal was coming from. Continue reading

Back to Basics

At age 45, Vince Lombardi became a head football coach in the NFL for the first time in his life. It was 1959, and he had the challenging task of leading the Green Bay Packers, coming off their worse season ever with a 1-10-1 record. He clearly had his work cut out for him.

But Lombardi wasn’t going to let the previous year’s record shape his expectations. This was a new season, after all—just as this year or this day can be a new season for each of us.

When the discouraged group of players gathered for their first preseason meeting, I’m sure they wondered how their new coach was planning to turn things around. Continue reading

Happy New Year

“Happy New Year” is a greeting you’ve probably both heard and said several times by now.  However, ThePreachersWord joins the chorus to welcome our readers to 2024 and to wish for each of you a “Happy New Year!”

Of course, enjoying happiness, prosperity, and success in the New Year in any endeavor requires much more than a wish.  It calls for commitment. Demands diligence. And requires persistent effort. This is true in business, education, sports, as well as in your spiritual pursuits.

Using “Happy New Year” as an acrostic, here are 12 suggestions that will help you find spiritual blessedness in the coming year. Continue reading

2023 Ministry Report

Like most years 2023 has brought a mixture of joys and sorrows; smiles and tears; and success and failure. However, a balanced view regards the year as mainly one of joy, smiles, and success.

As most of our regular readers know we resigned from full time local work in 2018, but have not retired from preaching, teaching and writing. For almost 3 years we traveled full time, combining it with ministry opportunities. That period took us to 38 states, 10 countries, and 48 congregations.

It’s hard to believe but this coming February will be our 3 year anniversary of buying a home and living in Beverly Hills, Florida. We have, however, been blessed with a wonderful year of travel, as well as preaching and teaching opportunities. Continue reading

12 Days of Happiness

The other day at the YMCA where we work out, they were passing out cards challenging us to participate in the 12 days of happiness.

With holiday busyness and the stress that often accompanies it, this is the Y’s way to encourage fitness of body, soul and mind. On the back of the card were “12 Suggested Self Care Activities.” Continue reading

Texting Jesus

I admit that I’m behind the curve regarding Artificial Intelligence (AI). Especially as it is being used by some to craft sermons, write spiritual blogs, or produce Bible class material.

But, I was surprised to recently learn that there is now an app called “Text with Jesus.” Continue reading

When I Don’t Feel Like It

Conservative columnist, Cal Thomas, just released his Thanksgiving column entitled, “Giving Thanks When I Don’t Feel Like It.”

The column reminds us that Abraham Lincoln issued his Proclamation of Thanksgiving in 1863. It was in the midst of the Civil War. Our nation was divided between North and South. Families were fractured. Even some churches were torn apart with different opinions. Continue reading
