Do You Want To Be A Better Christian?

“Preacher, I want to be a better Christian.”

This is a common refrain I’ve heard through the years from good people, God’s people, people seemingly sincere in desiring to improve their lives.

Yet, when I ask the question, “What would make you a better Christian?” Most people look dumbfounded. They’re not really sure what being a better Christian means in specific terms. Continue reading

Submission–Positive or Negative?

Our Wednesday evening Bible class where we worship at West Citrus is studying the “One Another” commands in the New Testament. Last night was the command “Submit to One Another” based on Ephesians 5:21

Our teacher, Marvin, conducted an interesting experiment in preparation for the class. He emailed 6 of his friends and asked their impression of the word “submission.”

To make it more interesting, he chose three of his friends who were Christians and the other three were non-Christians. Continue reading

Mission Drift

The recent protests on college campuses many of which resulted in violence, destruction of property, and physical confrontation and intimation of Jewish students captivated the 24 hour news cycle of cable news as well as the attention of the American public.

Various pundits and commentators observed that these universities and their administration, as well as many professors had lost sight of their mission. Instead of educating students and preparing them for life, they were indoctrinating them in far left radical ideology. Continue reading

Are You a Christian? Or Just a “Cultural Christian?”

“I call myself a cultural Christian,” said Richard Dawkins, the well known British evolutionary biologist, author, and atheist.

Cultural Christian? What’s that? You may wonder.

Dawkins further explained in a recent interview with Rachel Johnson broadcast on March 31st on LBC. Continue reading

“He Being Dead Still Speaks”

It was 30 years ago today I received that call. You know “that call.”

It’s one you’re expecting sooner or later, but hoping against hope that it’s later. The voice on the other end speaks softly, slowly, and kindly. In hushed tones they gently inform that your loved has died.

On that day, April 25, 1994, the voice on the phone broke the news that my father, Roy C. Weliever, had passed from this life. Continue reading

In Memory and Tribute to Bob F. Owen

The ancient wise man opined that “It is better to go to the house of mourning than to the house of feasting” (Eccl.7:2).

This sentiment was never more evident and applicable than in our attendance at the memorial service for Bob F. Owen this past Saturday at the Temple Terrace Church of Christ. Continue reading

Listen To Calvin? Or Learn from the Ants?

My facebook friend, Jon W. Quinn, recently posted a piece based on the old comic strip Calvin and Hobbs by Bill Watterson.

While the comic paints  a humorous scene of Calvin’s interaction with some ants, Jon offers a serious and scriptural application,   We share it without additional comment.  Enjoy! Continue reading

Admonish One Another

Howard Hendricks tells the story in Footprints of a young man studying to be a minister. He was very talented, but was “riding rather than building on his background.” Toward the end of school year a caring professor called him into his office.

“Bill, I’m disappointed in you,” the professor kindly said.

“Really, Prof, why?” Continue reading

Coffee. Concerts. And Church.

“I believe it is unbiblical to elevate entertainment over preaching and to put public relations ahead of worship in our church services,” wrote John MacArthur in his book “Ashamed of the Gospel” and subtitled “When the Church Becomes Like the World.”

MacArthur’s book was orbitally published in 1993 and has been updated twice. He further warns against fleshly enticements, secular methods, and watering down the gospel to draw crowds. Current trends show little change as churches head farther in that direction. Continue reading
