Reflections on Washington’s Birthday

Today, February 22nd, is George Washington’s birthday.

I remember as a kid growing up in Central Indiana and attending Cartersburg Elementary, Washington’s Birthday was a holiday. We learned about the “Father of our Country.” About his courage. His humility. His patriotism. And his piety.

It was a school holiday. There was no mail. Banks were closed, as well as federal, state and local offices. In fact, in that day, most businesses were closed to pay him homage. Continue reading

Who Possesses the Greatest Power?

Yesterday two of the most powerful men in the world met for a summit in San Francisco. Joe Biden, the U.S. President, and Xi Jinping, the Chinese leader.

While the leaders of both world powers emphasized the need for mutual respect and understanding, most pundits feel the talks will produce little that is substantive. Continue reading

‘Pride’ Isn’t a Virtue, It’s a Vice

(Editor’s Note: Both the title and most of the content of today’s post is from an article written by Zachary Mettler and posted on The Daily Citizen sponsored by Focus on the Family.  While we may differ with some of their theology, this piece offers a Biblical perspective of this currently controversial issue.)

Saturday’s Pride month celebration at the White House, which was billed as the largest ever at the executive mansion, featured a massive rainbow flag, flanked by two American flags, unfurled from the top of the president’s residence.

For Christians, this event presents much to unpack. Continue reading

When Will America Fall?

How would you destroy a country from within?” asks conservative columnist Cal Thomas in a recent transcript.

His answer? “There are many ways, some of which I’ve written about, including massive national debt, uncontrolled immigration, and a loss of shared moral values.”

“All three are tearing us apart,” Thomas adds, “especially the loss of shared moral values.” Continue reading

Was George Washington Wrong?

“Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports,” opined President George Washington in his 1796 farewell address.

Apparently 65% of Americans disagree with our Founding Father. Continue reading

When The Wicked Thrive

“We have a soul problem” in America argued Trey Gowdy in the wake of the Covenant School Shooting that left six dead, three 9-year-old children and three adults.

This occurred just days after a high school shooting in Denver. According to a story by the Washington Post this is the 17th such incident in 2023.

“We’ve got to have some kind of conversation about what is wrong with the soul of this country that someone would kill a child,” Gowdy said on “America Reports” Tuesday. “I don’t know the answer. I just know that we have a soul problem in addition to a violence problem in this country.” Continue reading

Public Prayer and Piety When Facing a Crisis

Do you know who prayed this prayer?

“God, we come to you in these moments that we don’t understand, that are hard, because we believe that you’re God and coming to you and praying to you has impact… “If we didn’t believe that prayer didn’t work we wouldn’t ask this of you God. I believe in prayer…we believe in prayer.” Continue reading

What Can the Righteous Do?

Next month the USA will be celebrating its 246th birthday. Celebrate, however, is not a word right now that’s on our lips or in our hearts.

Since May 14th there have been three mass shootings that have made the news. The attack at a Tops supermarket in Buffalo, NY that left 10 dead. The horrific attack on an elementary school in Uvalde, TX that took the lives of 19 little children and two teachers. Then yesterday an attack at a medical center that left 4 dead and many injured.

Furthermore, there is the obvious moral decline in America today that seems to be increasing at an alarming rate in the past two decades. There is an increase in various addictions, violent crime in our major cities, riots, suicide, and sexual and gender confusion. Continue reading

What America Needs

During the past couple of days, I’ve been listening to politicians, political pundits, and experts from various fields discuss the “why” of the recent school shooting in Uvalde, Texas that snuffed out the lives of 19 innocent little children.

This occurred just 10 days after a gunman went on a shooting rampage at a Tops supermarket in Buffalo, New York where 10 people were shot and killed whose only crime was going grocery shopping.

Why are there so many of these mass shootings in America? Continue reading

The Rise and Roots of Crime

You don’t have to be a “news junkie” to know that crime in the United States is increasing.

Violent crime is especially on the rise according to FBI statistics. And not just in our major cities like Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles. Even in our rural community of Citrus County our local newspaper, The Chronicle, reports murders, rapes, and armed robberies.

Recently President Biden met with New York Mayor Eric Adams to discuss the crime problem and proposals to reduce violent crime. Continue reading
