Matthew 23:11-12

There is a story of two Civil War Generals: George A. Custer and Ulysses S. Grant. Both graduated from West Point–Gen. Grant, being the oldest, graduated in the 1840’s and Gen. Custer in 1861. Grant fought in several wars and was a field General in every sense of the word. In 1865, he was the one who forced Robert E. Lee to surrender to the north Continue reading

Don’t Become a Fatality of Failure

Today is “National Failures Day,” according to the calendar of weird and wacky holidays.

This day began in 2010 when “some university students in Finland got together and decided they needed to set a date to officially commemorate life’s failures.”

Before you brush it off as ridiculous, their web page makes the point that everyone has experienced failure in life. For instance… Continue reading

Growing in Discipline

“Never did a great mind produce so little,” commented William Barclay about Samuel Taylor Coleridge the British poet.

In summarizing Coleridge’s undisciplined life, Barclay wrote, “He left Cambridge University to join the army; he left the army because he could not rub down a horse; he returned to Oxford and left without a degree. He began a paper called “The Watchman” which lived for ten numbers and then died.” Continue reading

Back To School Advice

Student Athlete Advancement (SSA) is an organization that provides guidance to High School student athletes who are being recruited to colleges and universities.

I like the quote on their web page: “”WINNING isn’t everything. But WANTING TO WIN is.” That puts sports in its proper perspective, but elevates an attitude that is necessary to be successful in life. Continue reading

Mark 10:17-22

Dr. Vivek H. Murthy, the U.S. Surgeon General, recently related in a New York Times article the sad story of one of his patients.

The man worked for years in the food industry with a modest salary and humble lifestyle. Then he won the lottery. Overnight, his life changed. He quit his job and moved into a large house in a gated community. Continue reading

Addressing Loneliness

The problem of loneliness has made news headlines lately. From CNN to NBC to FNC, it’s reported that loneliness is now a national epidemic.

Surgeon General, Vivek H. Murthy, has released an official government 81 page report calling for “a national framework to rebuild social connection and community in America.”

It is ironic that in an age of social media connection, so many are actually disconnected from real life relationships. You can live in a large community, but feel lonely. You can attend a big church, but feel alone. Continue reading

Growing In Love

There’s an old peanuts comic strip where Lucy is making fun of Linus for wanting to be a doctor.

She says, “You could never be a doctor. You know why? Because you don’t love mankind, that’s why!” Continue reading
