‘Pride’ Isn’t a Virtue, It’s a Vice

(Editor’s Note: Both the title and most of the content of today’s post is from an article written by Zachary Mettler and posted on The Daily Citizen sponsored by Focus on the Family.  While we may differ with some of their theology, this piece offers a Biblical perspective of this currently controversial issue.)

Saturday’s Pride month celebration at the White House, which was billed as the largest ever at the executive mansion, featured a massive rainbow flag, flanked by two American flags, unfurled from the top of the president’s residence.

For Christians, this event presents much to unpack. Continue reading

Psalm 139

The other day our grandchildren, Miles and Katherine, came over to our house to swim. As we stood on the pool deck, Miles exclaimed, “Look, Papaw, there’s a black Asian beetle.”

Honestly, I didn’t know anything about its ethnicity. I just wanted to throw it out in the yard.

However, 8 year old Miles, began to speculate how it arrived from Asia. Maybe on a cargo ship from China, he opined. Regardless, he was very excited about the little bitty beetle. Continue reading

When Will America Fall?

How would you destroy a country from within?” asks conservative columnist Cal Thomas in a recent transcript.

His answer? “There are many ways, some of which I’ve written about, including massive national debt, uncontrolled immigration, and a loss of shared moral values.”

“All three are tearing us apart,” Thomas adds, “especially the loss of shared moral values.” Continue reading

Growing in Discipleship

Recently I read about a young man in the Army who during Operation Desert Storm was called to go to Iraq, when our nation declared war on Saddam Hussein.

However, the young man didn’t want to go. He explained that he hadn’t joined the army to go war. He joined because of the benefits: the pay, the college tuition, the insurance, and hopefully some travel. He just didn’t want to travel to Iraq and fight. Continue reading

The Journey Is Too Short

Last week my facebook friend, Chris Murray, wife of Charles Murray, who preaches at the Skyview Church in Pinellas Park, posted a piece that caught my attention.

She talked about the problem of grumpy people who gripe about anybody and everything. As Chris wrote, “On a daily basis we encounter people in the grocery store, on the street, in our cars, on the phone and sometimes even at home or in worship service who fall into the category of unhappy people.” Continue reading

“Is Nothing Sacred Any Longer?”

We woke up yesterday to the news of another shooting. This time it was following a graduation cermony in Richmond, Virginia.

Sadly, two people died. One an 18 year old, Shawn Jackson, who had just graduated, and his father, Renzo Smith. Five others were injured in the hail of gunfire. Continue reading

Psalm 127

Steve Shepherd tells a story about some construction workers who drove to their local lumber yard. One of them walked into the office and said, “We need some four-by-twos.”

“You mean two-by-fours, don’t you?” The clerk asked.

The man said, “I’ll go check,” and went back to the truck. He returned and said, “Yeah, I meant two-by-fours.”

“All right. How long do you need them?” asked the clerk. Continue reading

It Ain’t Over Till It’s Over

My good friend Ralph Walker sent me this news article about an unbelievable ending to a baseball game.

It was the New York high school championship game played last week. Hornell was one strike away from winning 5-4 over Palmyra-Macedon. Continue reading

Value Yourself

“Personal development is the belief that you are worth the effort, time, and energy needed to develop yourself,” wrote author and motivational speaker Denis Waitley.”

While the Bible warns against the sin of pride (Jas. 4:6), and the problem of thinking more highly of ourselves than we ought to think (Rom. 12:3), some Christians fail to grow because they think too little of themselves. Continue reading
