The Paradox of Life

Yesterday morning while enjoying my early morning coffee overlooking the Pacific Ocean, I opened my facebook page to learn that my friend and preaching colleague, Tony, had passed from this life.

I knew he was fighting a tough battle against cancer, but didn’t expect this. Not now. It was too soon. He had so much more to give. To share. And to use his voice to make a difference in the Kingdom and in the world.

Soon other facebook notifications popped up. Birth announcements. Birthday notices. Anniversary celebrations. Others like us, enjoying vacations in far away places. Continue reading

The Purpose of Work

I suppose it’s ironic that I’m writing about work while enjoying an extended Hawaiian vacation.

However, as I noticed several businesses in Kaunakakai with signs saying they would be closed on Labor Day, the thought occurred to me–I hope some people are working. We are leaving Moloka‘i today and flying to Kauai. I need a ticket agent, a baggage handler, and especially a pilot. Continue reading

Respecting Differences

This week we were scheduled to be vacationing in Maui. Then the unthinkable happened. The entire town of Lahaina was destroyed by a raging fire fueled by fierce winds.

Technically, we could have traveled to Maui. But it didn’t seem prudent. Or respectful. Our travel agent agreed. And, of course, the residents of Maui were asking tourists not to come. So here we are on the island of Moloka‘i.

However, yesterday I learned that Hawaiian Airlines is promoting a special from LAX for only $82. Their web page urges people to visit Maui to support their economy. Continue reading

Are You An Aloha Ambassador?

Aloha!

That’s the typical greeting here in Hawaii, where we’ve been celebrating our 55th anniversary.

Currently we’re visiting the island of Molokai. But prior to leaving Oahu, I noticed people walking around Waikiki wearing bright green shirts that read “Aloha Ambassador.”

I learned these men and women were employed to greet people, provide information, and assistance to visitors on the island. Furthermore, they were to extend Aloha to everyone they met. Continue reading

People Helping People

In the aftermath of the wild fires that have destroyed the town of Lahaina on the Island of Maui and left incredible devastation, destruction, and death, there are emerging stories of a hurting community rising up to help each other.

Will Cain recently reported on his podcast one such story about two women Andrea Fausett and Ciera Leavitt. Continue reading

Matthew 23:11-12

There is a story of two Civil War Generals: George A. Custer and Ulysses S. Grant. Both graduated from West Point–Gen. Grant, being the oldest, graduated in the 1840’s and Gen. Custer in 1861. Grant fought in several wars and was a field General in every sense of the word. In 1865, he was the one who forced Robert E. Lee to surrender to the north Continue reading

Don’t Become a Fatality of Failure

Today is “National Failures Day,” according to the calendar of weird and wacky holidays.

This day began in 2010 when “some university students in Finland got together and decided they needed to set a date to officially commemorate life’s failures.”

Before you brush it off as ridiculous, their web page makes the point that everyone has experienced failure in life. For instance… Continue reading

Growing in Discipline

“Never did a great mind produce so little,” commented William Barclay about Samuel Taylor Coleridge the British poet.

In summarizing Coleridge’s undisciplined life, Barclay wrote, “He left Cambridge University to join the army; he left the army because he could not rub down a horse; he returned to Oxford and left without a degree. He began a paper called “The Watchman” which lived for ten numbers and then died.” Continue reading
