There is One God

When the late Dr. Hugh Moorhead was a philosophy grad student at the University of Chicago, he began asking some of the great thinkers of the 20th century “What is the meaning or purpose of life?”

Over the years he sent letters to over 250 renowned scientists, philosophers, authors, and intellectuals. Later, while chairman of the philosophy department at Northeastern Illinois University, Moorhead published the responses and his conclusions. Continue reading

Weekly Recap: February 5-9

Greetings from Temple Terrace, Florida

Norma Jean and I have been here all week attending the Florida College Lectures.

FC is a special place for us.  It is my alma mater.  We met here.  Married while a student here.  Both of our children attended FC. And later Norma Jean worked here for 10 years.

But what makes FC so special.  Is the people.  The relationships we’ve developed and have nurtured and nourished in the past 50 years.  I’ve been blessed to have attended every Lecture program since my senior year in High School in 1966. Continue reading

You Have Need of Endurance

Yesterday morning at the Florida College Lectures Ken Chapman reminisced about his years growing up in North Alabama.

He recalled how much he looked forward to playing football as a third grader during recess. There were occasions he said when older students would assist or supervise the younger ones during this play period, and sometimes they would join in the game. Continue reading

Don’t Be A Dull Listener

Yesterday morning on the way to the Florida College Lectures, I witnessed a car on fire at the intersection of Fowler Avenue and Morris Bridge Rd.

Flames were shooting upward and the firemen were quickly responding to extinguish the blaze. You could see the sense of urgency in their actions. Without the right response the situation could have become much worse. Continue reading

Jesus is Superior to Angels

“While angels are immensely fascinating to us, and genuinely astonishing, we must remember that any status that may be ascribed to them has been granted by God,” observed Kyle Goodwin in lecture yesterday morning entitled, “A Son, Greater than Angels.

Both Kyle’s lecture and the following one “A Little Lower than the Angels, by Jeremy Bard, were the lead lessons Tuesday morning in this study of Hebrews at the Florida College Lectures (Hebrews 1:4-2:18). Continue reading

God Has Spoken Through His Son

Norma Jean and I are in Temple Terrace, Florida, this week attending the Florida College Lectures. I have been blessed to attend every year since 1966.

This year’s theme is from the book of Hebrews, “We Have a Great High Priest.” Last night, to a packed house, preceded by a spirited period of singing led by Adam Olson, Ryan Boyer, presented the keynote address–“God Has Spoken to Us in His Son.” Continue reading

Sharing is Fundamental

It was little Emma’s first day at Kindergarten. Upon returning home her Mom asked, “How did you like school?”

“I hated it!” Emma exclaimed.

“Why?” Asked her Mom. “What happened?” Continue reading

In whatever form you receive ThePreachersWord would you share it with 3 (or more) of your friends?

Jesus Heals the Hurting

My facebook friend and preaching colleague, Doy Moyer, is careful student of the Word and an excellent writer.  Today, without comment, we offer one of his recent facebook posts that has a universal appeal for all our readers.

The late James P. Miller used to advise preacher boys, “When you don’t know what to preach, preach to the hurting.  There’s one on every pew.”  He’s right.  In fact, there may be more than one.  In this spirit, we offer Doy’s thoughtful and scriptural piece. Continue reading

7 Responses To Our Crumbling Moral Foundation

“Religion and good morals are the only solid foundation of public liberty and happiness,” opined one of America’s Founding Fathers, Samuel Adams (1722-1803).

In an age when it seems the moral, ethical, and spiritual foundations all around us are crumbling, the  Psalmist’s question bears repeating and reflecting on.

If the foundations are destroyed,
What can the righteous do?
(Ps. 11:3) Continue reading
