Jesus’ Preaching vs Modern Preachers

I assume most of our readers know the name Sewell Hall.  If you don’t, he’s a 94 year old gospel preacher living in the Atlanta area who has dedicated his life to living for Christ.

Brother Hall is  known as a careful Bible student, a faithful proclaimer of the Word, an excellent song leader, as well as a thought-provoking writer and author.  Among his published works are two of my favorites, The Winter of Life: Redeeming the Time, which encourages those of  us as we’re growing older, and Hallmarks: Lights in the World, true stories about every day Christians who are letting their light shine and making a difference in the world. Let’s Replace Boundaries with Morals

“Nowadays we’ve forgotten the word morals and replaced it with boundaries,” opined Freya India a London based freelance writer who focuses on politics, psychology, and culture.

I don’t know anything about Miss India’s religious affiliation, but she is spot on in her critique regarding many of our cultural problems today. Continue reading

Ecclesiastes 8:11

“If you don’t punish this stuff, it’s going to continue,” commented Amanda Silverstein, a Columbia University student when interviewed yesterday by a national news outlet.

Amanda, of course, was referring to the anti-Israel protests that marked the beginning of the school year at Columbia University. Jewish students felt unsafe by the taunts, insults, and outright hate speech hurled by the protestors. In a few cases, there were threats of physical violence. Continue reading

When Brethren Disappoint Us

Sometime ago my friend, preaching colleague and fellow blogger, Roger Shouse posted some thoughts from a class he taught on “Expectations.”

They are from his blog Jump Starts Daily, which I highly recommend. The best compliment I can give Roger is that he often posts ideas which I wish I had thought of for ThePreachersWord. This one of those posts.

You will profit from this post. Continue reading

Should We Surrender our Individual Rights?

According to the calendar of unusual holidays, today is “Individual Rights Day,” celebrated every year on August 29th.

The “holiday” is said to be in honor of John Locke, the 17th century English physician and philosopher who wrote, “Anything that a man has as a matter of human rights or civil rights is to remain inviolably his.” Continue reading

Matthew 26:36-46–When The Flesh is Weak

It was the beginning of 3 days that these 3 men would never forget. Never.

The hour was late. Much had happened. The last supper. Prideful posturing. Washing feet. Judas’ departure. And the ensuing walk across the Kedron valley with Jesus teaching. Encouraging. Comforting. Promising. Continue reading

While I personally have political views and a party affiliation, I try to keep ThePreachersWord free from promoting partisan politics or politicians.

However, I read some good advice from the conservative columnist Cal Thomas, worthy of your consideration. I offer it with a few comments. Continue reading

Self Control is Fundamental

“Never did a great man produce so little,” wrote William Barclay in describing the life of the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834).

Barclay further substantiated his charge writing, “He left Cambridge University to join the Army; he left the Army because he couldn’t rub down a horse; he returned to Oxford and left without a degree.” Continue reading
