Honoring What Heaven Has Hallowed

While in the mountains, I picked up a massive bag of candy at Food City, which claims to have 155 pieces. Norma Jean saw it and quipped, “You must be expecting a lot of kids for Halloween!”

Actually, we’ve never had trick-or-treaters come to our current home. So, I have to eat it all.

Apart from the candy and the kids, Halloween always reminds me of the word “hallow,” which we rarely use today unless we’re quoting the model prayer Jesus gave the disciples. But there actually is a connection. Continue reading

John 7, Who is this Man?

Our passage presents a vivid picture of diverse opinions regarding who Jesus was.

The occasion is the Feast of Tabernacles, a festive and jubilant time for the Jews, who celebrated God’s providential care for their forefathers who wandered in the wilderness for 40 years. The reactions of various people to Jesus can be summarized in three words, as suggested by Warren Wiersbe: Disbelief. Debate. Division. Continue reading

Seeing Through God’s Eyes: A Heavenly Point of View

Thomas B. Wheeler, who served as CEO of the Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company for many years, loved to tell this story about himself.

Wheeler and his wife were driving along an interstate highway when he noticed that their car was low on gas. He got off the highway at the next exit and soon found a rundown gas station with just one gas pump. He asked the lone attendant to fill the tank and check the oil, then went for a little walk around the station to stretch his legs. Continue reading

Keep the Fire Burning

Norma Jean and I have been enjoying our annual Fall trip to the Smoky Mountains.

Not only do we never tire of drinking in the beauty of the colorful foliage, but we also like a morning fire in our cabin. We’ve rented some places with gas fireplaces, but we like a wood-burning fireplace. Sure, it’s a bit messier, takes more work, and costs more money, but we enjoy the flickering light, the radiating warmth, and the crackling sounds. Continue reading

Weekly Recap: October20-24

Greetings from Gatlinburg,

What a blessing to enjoy the handiwork of God’s creation in the beautiful Smoky Mountains.  And especially so in the Fall, with colorful foliage dotting the mountains and valleys.

It’s also a blessing to reconnect with old friends —some local, some from out of state —who are visiting the Smokies, as well as the brethren in the little church we’ve come to love at Cosby. It’s always a delight to be with our friends, Olie and Mary Williamson, who are pillars in both the church and the community.  At 93 years young, still preaching and playing golf, Olie gives us hope of more years to minister and serve the Lord. He’s My King!

Yesterday, we published a post with some thoughts spawned by the recent “No Kings” protest. If you missed it, take a couple of minutes to read it now.

I noticed on Facebook that several people have posted a video by late 20th-century African-American minister S. M. Lockridge. These words came toward the end of his famous sermon, “He’s My King.”

Today’s post offers our readers the transcript of that powerful presentation. It speaks to the greatness of Christ and his absolute supremacy and preeminence. Read it slowly. Thoughtfully. Reverently. And adoringly. Continue reading

No Kings? Really?

This past Saturday, “No Kings” protests, according to organizers, drew an estimated 7 million people at 2600 rallies and events across the USA.

The “No Kings” organizers are protesting the policies and what they perceive as the authoritarian rule of President Trump’s administration. Someone quipped on facebook that the protests must have worked. “I woke up Monday morning, and we still don’t have a King. Just a President.” Continue reading

Hebrews 2:1, 4 Warning Signs You May Be Drifting from Your Faith

“People do not drift toward Holiness,” wrote D. A. Carson.” We drift toward compromise and call it tolerance; we drift toward disobedience and call it freedom; we drift toward superstition and call it faith.”

Dr. Carson is right. Faith doesn’t dissipate overnight or in a single moment. It gradually slips and drifts. Unintentionally and accidentally.

For this reason, the Bible urges Believers to “pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it” (Heb. 2:1) Continue reading

When Fear Meets Faith

Many American manufacturers fear being sued by customers who misuse their products, so they go to great lengths to provide prominent warnings.

Every year, the Wacky Warning Labels™ Contest selects “the most absurd and silly warning labels attached to everyday products.”

Here were the winners: Continue reading
