From Spectators to Servants: The Call to Participatory Christianity

In his book Not Too Old, David Faust recounts the story of the writer George Plimpton, renowned for his writing about sports.

By the time he died in 2003, at age 76, Plimpton had experienced “an amazing variety of adventures.”

He boxed against Sugar Ray Robinson and Archie Moore, who gave him a bloody nose. He trained with the Detroit Lions’ football team, played golf with Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, and pitched less than one inning in an exhibition baseball game. Continue reading

Obey the Word with Joy

Roger Staubach, who led the Dallas Cowboys to two Super Bowl championships, admitted that his position as a quarterback who didn’t call his own signals was a source of trial for him.

Coach Landry sent in every play. He told Roger when to pass, when to run, and only in emergency situations could he change the play (and he had better be right!). Even though Roger considered Coach Landry to have a “genius mind” when it came to football strategy, pride told him that he should be able to run his own team. Continue reading

Weekly Recap: September 22-26

Greetings from Beverly Hills, FL

Welcome to our new readers from China.

Over the past 13 years, ThePreachersWord has been read by people in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide.  But there have been very few hits from China.  However, over the past month, we’ve seen a significant increase, going from just a handful of hits to thousands.  I’m not sure of the reason or the source, but thank you to whoever is sharing our little blog with the people of China.  We welcome our Chinese readers and invite you to submit your questions or comments.  Continue reading

Observations and Advice from a Septuagenarian

I saw a quip the other day on facebook that offered this insight: “With age comes wisdom, but sometimes age comes alone”.

So, true.

A few weeks ago, someone posted this on their facebook page from an unknown source. It began with someone asking a friend who was past 70 and heading toward 80 years old what sort of changes he was experiencing in his life. This was his response. Continue reading

Another Failed Prediction

Today is September 25, 2025, and we’re still here. So, are you.  As well as our readers around the world.

So, why is this so remarkable? Because the “rapture” was predicted to occur either September 23 or 24. Continue reading

Matthew 5:43-48, Love Your Enemies

“My husband, Charlie. He wanted to save young men, just like the one who took his life,” shared Charlie’s widow, Erika, in an emotional memorial service on Sunday for the slain political activist.

Erika quoted Jesus’ statement about those who were crucifying Him in Luke 23:34. “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Continue reading

What Comes Out When You’re Upset?

One Sunday, a preacher took two jars to the pulpit and set them on a table. They looked identical. “These jars,” he told the congregation, “came from the same factory. They were made of the same materials, and they hold the same amount of liquid. But they are different.” Continue reading

Illuminate the World with Good Works

In an article in the New York Times, Robert D. McFadden writes about “Charles Feeney, Who Made a Fortune and Then Gave It Away,” and died at age 92.

Feeney was raised by working-class parents who struggled during the Depression to pay a $32 monthly mortgage. Continue reading

Weekly Recap: September 15-19

Greetings from Jacksonville, FL

This week, Norma Jean and I have been the guests of the Cypress Grove Church, where  I’m holding a meeting.

Russ Roberts preaches for this wonderful group of Christians.  His ministry has been greatly enhanced by the loving involvement of his wife, Liz, the daughter of the late Ed Harrell.  The church has about 50 members, with many young couples and around 20 children.  So, the atmosphere is lively, enthusiastic, and welcoming.  We’ve been warmly received this week and encouraged by their reception of the lessons.  If you’re ever in this area, we recommend you pay them a visit. God Sees. God Hears. God Knows.

My friend and preaching colleague, Warren Berkley, has a blog called Berksblog.  Recently, he posted a quote on his Facebook page by J. C. Ryle, a 19th-century British preacher and writer.

Ryle’s words speak to a pressing need that is real and relevant for our 21st-century culture as well.  Read it slowly, thoughtfully, and personally, then consider a few observations. Continue reading
