Weekly Recap: July 14-18

Greetings from Welland, Ontario, Canada

The highlight of our week has definitely been the VBS at Wellandport.  The preparation of the teachers, the execution of their plan, and the enthusiasm of the kids and parents all combine for a wonderful spiritually enriching week.  I feel blessed to have some small role in teaching the adult class.  And thanks to the Shepherds here for their invitation and encouragement. When Sin Tracks You Down

I’m not sure not sure if this has made either cable news or the mainstream news media in the United States, but it’s all over facebook.

Andy Bryon, the married CEO of the tech company, Astronomer, was recently caught on the Jumbotron at a Coldplay concert canoodling with his newly promoted HR Director, Kristin Cabot. Continue reading

Jesus My Savior

Last night we concluded a wonderful 4 days of VBS at the Wellandport Church here in Ontario, Canada. It’s been my privilege for several years to teach the adult class.

Our theme this year was names of Jesus. We studied 5 of more than 200 names, tittles, designations, and metaphors that describe the “The Lamb of God.” Nazarene. Messiah. Lord. Almighty. And last night was Savior. Continue reading

Are You Using Your Spiritual Resources?

Remember the commercial that ran several years ago that spoofed the movie Castaway, in which Tom Hanks played a FedEx worker whose company plane crashed and left him stranded on a desert island for years?

In the commercial, a man, who resembles the bedraggled Hanks. is also a FedEx employee who is rescued and takes a package to a suburban home. Continue reading

Jesus’ Zeal: A Passion for God’s Purpose

Christ burned with such zeal for the glory of his Father that he could not endure to see it profaned without expressing his indignation…He who was so gentle and meek toward men was like a roaring lion when the honor of God was at stake,” wrote John Calvin in his commentary of the Gospel of John

This reference speaks to one of the most vivid illustrations of Jesus’ zeal when He cleansed the Temple (Jn. 2:13-17). Continue reading

Weekly Recap: July 7-11

Greetings from Welland, Ontario, Canada

Our annual summer trip to Canada may come as a surprise to some of you given Norma’s recent surgery and other health issues.  However, her surgeon gave us her blessing if Norma felt like traveling.  So, here we are.  Howbeit, we did travel at a slower pace, taking 4 days and giving Norma plenty of time to rest each evening and without an early morning start. That’s A Good One!

My facebook page is connected to a number of groups which are mostly related to spiritual growth and Bible teaching. But one group is simply called “Christians who enjoy good clean jokes.”

Taking a break from all the serious issues in the world and church, I decided on this facebook Friday to share a bit a of humor from that page. Several of these have a spiritual application. But I will forgo the lessons learned and let you use in it your own teaching. Or just enjoy it, and delight in a good laugh. Continue reading

Churches, Preachers, and Politics

On Monday the IRS rescinded a 1954 ruling which prohibited churches from endorsing political candidates with the threat of losing their tax-exempt status.

While the ruling was rarely enforced, Politico hailed this as a move that was a major win for evangelical groups. Continue reading

Titus 3:14–Helping Others

He’s being hailed as an American hero by Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem.

U. S. Coast Guard rescue swimmer, Scott Ruskan, was called upon to help during the torrential flood in Kerrville, Texas, during the 4th of July holiday.

It was the first rescue mission of his career and he was sent to Camp Mystic, where he was the first Coast Guard officer on the scene. In a GMA interview Ruskan said there were over 200 children who were all scared, terrified, cold, having probably the worst day of their lives.” Continue reading
