Psalm 23 #8– The Shepherd’s Comfort

“Your Rod and Your Staff, They Comfort Me”

The New York post reported a survey that only 21% of Americans have experienced “true comfort in the past 24 hours.”

The study polled 2,000 Americans who suggested feeling at ease was difficult. Other studies have shown that the stress level for many people is currently very high right now.

How do you find comfort? Feel at easy? Or overcome stress?

This series from Psalm 23 offers a solution to your tension and place where you can experience comfort, consolation, and solace. It is in knowing “The Lord is my Shepherd.”

In this eighth installment we find the familiar phrase “Your rod and your staff they comfort me.” David draws upon the ancient imagery of a shepherd caring for his sheep. To fully appreciate the significance, consider the symbolic nature of the rod and staff and how they apply to Christians.

The rod was a symbol of authority, protection, power, and defense. It was somewhat like a club, It could be used to safeguard both the shepherd and the sheep from danger. Thus the shepherd could protect the sheep from wild animals and thieves. With the rod he could safeguard the sheep from would be predators who would harm the sheep. The rod could even be used, if necessary to discipline the sheep.

Today God’s Word serves as a comforting “rod” to fight against those who would spiritually harm us. It is a tool to protect us from danger. To defend us against the devil’s attacks. To serve as the power and authority to defeat those who would scatter or devour the flock.

The rod offers Divine reassurance and reminds us that our Shepherd is actively involved in our lives. He cares for the sheep. Protects the sheep. Defends the sheep. And drives away danger.

The staff was a symbol of support and guidance. The shepherd’s staff was a long, slender stick, often with a curved hook at the end. It was primarily used for guiding and rescuing sheep. If a sheep wandered off, the shepherd would use the hook to gently pull it back to safety. The staff was also used to direct the flock along the right paths, ensuring they did not stray into dangerous territory. Spiritual metaphor is compelling.

Our Good Shepherd gives gentle guidance, provides firm direction, and offers genuine care. He knows what’s best for the sheep. We may also think of the staff reassuring us of God’s presence. Additionally, the staff is a source of comfort because it represents God’s presence. Shepherds would sometimes lean on their staffs for support during long journeys, just as believers lean on God during difficult times. The knowledge that God is always present, guiding and supporting His people, brings immense reassurance.

Phillip Keller relates seeing how a shepherd would gently hold his staff against the sheep to let them know he was “in touch” with them. He wrote, “They will walk along this way almost as they they were ‘hand in hand.’” So, it is with our walk with God. He is there by our side tenderly showing us “the way, the Truth and the life.”

The rod and the staff provide comfort. While difficulties, disappointments, and the trials of life are inevitable, we have the confidence of the Shepherd’s attention. His rod protects, His staff guides. And his presence reassures.

If you’re going through a tough time, feeling anxious, or your spirit’s disquieted, look to the Shepherd. He can calm the troubled soul and give you peace.
