The Right Gift

A woman woke up one morning, turned to her husband and said, “Honey, I just had a dream that you bought me a new gold necklace. What do you think it means?”

He answered, “I don’t know, but Valentine’s Day is coming soon. Then you’ll know.”

A few nights later, she again woke up after having a dream. She said, “This time, I dreamed you gave me a pearl necklace. What do you think it means?”

“You’ll know on Valentines’ Day,” he replied.

The morning of Valentine’s Day, she again woke up telling him about her dream: “This time I dreamed that you brought me a diamond necklace. What do you think it means?”

“Honey, be patient,” he said. “You’ll know tonight.”

That evening, the husband came home with a package and gave it to his wife. Delighted, she opened it and found a book titled “The Meaning of Dreams.”

Guys, in case you’ve forgotten, tomorrow is Valentine’s Day. You might want to get your sweetheart a gift. But ignore the example of the guy in the above story. Sure, it’s often difficult to get the perfect gift. But following Peter’s admonition helps.

“Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers” (1Pet. 3:7).

The right gift shows her that you understand her feelings. Her wants. Her needs. Her desires. Her emotions. And even her “hints.”

The right gift says, “I Love you.” “I care for you.” “I appreciate you.” I need you.” “I honor you.”

The right gift doesn’t have to be expensive. I just needs to express your sincere love. Your genuine affection. Your unique relationship.

The right gift reflects her personality, character, and style. It answers a physical, emotional or spiritual need.

The right gift understands her love language. Author Gary Chapman says there are 5 primary love languages. Words of Affirmation. Quality Time. Receiving Gifts. Acts of Service. Physical Touch. Find a way on Valentine’s Day to speak her love language.

The right gift is meaningful because it comes from you. Your heart. Your love. Your life. James Russell Lowell was right when he wrote, “the gift without the giver is bare.”

However, there is another gift, on this day of love, that’s good to remember as well. It’s a divine gift. A spiritual gift. A God gift. “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God” (Eph. 2:8).

God’s “indescribable gift” of salvation through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ for our sins is the ultimate gift. It is love beyond comprehension. Grace that transcends human logic. And mercy that is holy, heavenly and generous above our capacity to fully understand. Through Jesus Christ, God is the giver of every good gift. Every perfect gift. Every spiritual gift. (Jas 1:17; Eph. 1:3).

If you enjoy the blessing of a godly Christian mate and the commonality of faith in Christ, then you share together a gift that is so special. So unique. And increasingly rare in this world. Be thankful. And embrace one another as God’s gift to you.

I sure hope you find the right gift for your sweetheart. But most of all appreciate the gifts you’ve been given by God. And be that right gift for each other.
