Weekly Recap: August 26-30

Greetings from Cross City, Florida

Norma Jean and I came up here Thursday to preach at the Spring Warrior Church in Perry, Florida.  This was the final night of their summer series.  I spoke on the topic “What Does the Bible Say About Heaven and Hell.  If you would like to hear, you can access it through their YouTube Channel.

We’re staying at the historic Putnam Lodge, built in 1927.  It has a unique ambiance and is nice change of pace from corporate hotels.  If you’re ever coming up US 19, I recommend it. Continue reading

When Brethren Disappoint Us

Sometime ago my friend, preaching colleague and fellow blogger, Roger Shouse posted some thoughts from a class he taught on “Expectations.”

They are from his blog Jump Starts Daily, which I highly recommend. The best compliment I can give Roger is that he often posts ideas which I wish I had thought of for ThePreachersWord. This one of those posts.

You will profit from this post. Continue reading

Should We Surrender our Individual Rights?

According to the calendar of unusual holidays, today is “Individual Rights Day,” celebrated every year on August 29th.

The “holiday” is said to be in honor of John Locke, the 17th century English physician and philosopher who wrote, “Anything that a man has as a matter of human rights or civil rights is to remain inviolably his.” Continue reading

Matthew 26:36-46–When The Flesh is Weak

It was the beginning of 3 days that these 3 men would never forget. Never.

The hour was late. Much had happened. The last supper. Prideful posturing. Washing feet. Judas’ departure. And the ensuing walk across the Kedron valley with Jesus teaching. Encouraging. Comforting. Promising. Continue reading

Good Advice in an Election Year

While I personally have political views and a party affiliation, I try to keep ThePreachersWord free from promoting partisan politics or politicians.

However, I read some good advice from the conservative columnist Cal Thomas, worthy of your consideration. I offer it with a few comments. Continue reading

Self Control is Fundamental

“Never did a great man produce so little,” wrote William Barclay in describing the life of the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834).

Barclay further substantiated his charge writing, “He left Cambridge University to join the Army; he left the Army because he couldn’t rub down a horse; he returned to Oxford and left without a degree.” Continue reading

Weekly Recap: August 19-23

Greetings from Beverly Hills, Fl

Yesterday Norma Jean and I celebrated our 56th wedding anniversary.  It has been a great journey.  Literally!  She is my best friend, my lover, and my partner in ministry.  Together, we have worked full time for 9 different churches in 6 different states.  We’ve traveled together to all 50 states, as well 15 countries, and several U.S. and British territories.  Like all couples we’ve had our share of joys and sorrows, good times and tough times,  problems and challenges.  However, with faith in Jesus and commitment to each other, we’ve come a long way.  We’ve been blessed.  And we thank God. Continue reading

How to Overcome Negative Feelings

My facebook friend and sister in Christ, Sherry Stephens from Wainfleet, Ontario, Canada, recently posted something from the Stay Positive facebook page that captured my attention,.

It’s only 24 words. But the thoughts are powerful. Life changing. And better yet, Biblical based. Read them carefully. Slowly. And thoughtfully. Let them sink in. Continue reading

An Unborn Human Being

Abortion rights access will be on the ballot in at least 8 states on the November 5th election, including the battleground state Arizona.

Conservatives, opposed to abortion, have distributed pamphlets providing  information about abortion referring to the “unborn human being” in the mother’s womb. This angered liberals, prompting a law suit and a ruling by a Maricopa County Superior Court judge, who said the term “unborn human being” was “packed with emotion and partisan meaning” and ordered it to be replaced “with a neutral term.” Continue reading
