Matthew 12:33-37–Words Reveal Character

Menander the Greek dramatist, who lived 300 years before Jesus, wrote: “A man’s character can be known from his words.”

The American author and humorist, Mark Twain, once quipped, “A man’s character may be learned from the adjectives which he habitually uses in conversation.” Continue reading

“In God We Trust”

On this date in history, July 30, 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed “a law declaring “In God We Trust” to be the nation’s official motto.”

While the phrase had been used on coins since the Civil War, it was also mandated to be printed on all paper currency as well.

In 1954 in a Flag Day Speech, Eisenhower explained his feelings about the motto, as well as the phrase “under God” included in the Pledge of allegiance two years earlier. Continue reading

Accountability is Fundamental

I recently read that John Wesley, the 18th century theologian and founder of Methodism, was “so concerned with building a righteous fellowship that he devised a series of questions for his followers to ask each other every week.”

Apparently some found the system too demanding and left the movement.

In a similar fashion, Chuck Swindoll composed 7 questions that he and a group of fellow ministers would periodically ask each other. Continue reading

Weekly Recap: July 22-26

Greetings from Welland, Ontario, Canada

Yesterday marked 4 weeks since we crossed the border and entered Ontario.  It’s been a busy time of teaching, preaching and enjoying the fellowship of these wonderful brethren.  We are thankful for the opportunity to minister in the Word and share time together.

Much has happened in the US since we’ve been away.   Our political, economic, and cultural events are of great interest to Canadians since it does impact their country as well.  Conservatives share similar concerns, and certainly Bible believers up here embrace the same values.  I noted a survey earlier that 70% of Canadians believe their country is “broken.”  This corresponds to a poll in the US that revealed over 3/4 of Americans believe our country is on the wrong track.  In that regard, if you missed it, I hope you will read “Seven Suggestions for Living in Uncertain Times.” Continue reading

The Power of Worship

We have often written about the Biblical emphasis on worship. God desires it. And He requires it.

Recently, I came across a meme posted on facebook by my friend and preaching colleague, Steve Wolfgang, that offers an important perspective. Continue reading

Are You “All In”?

Occasionally I will write a blog post based on some weird and wacky US holiday. Like “National Bear Hug Day.” Or “National Failures Day.” Or “Weary Willie Day.”

Writing today from Welland, Ontario, I wondered if Canada has some unusual holidays. A bit to my surprise, I discovered a page of “133 of the weirdest national days in a Canadian year.”

Tomorrow, July 26th is “National All or Nothing Day.” Continue reading

Matthew 7:6–Hogs and Dogs

“Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you in pieces,” commanded Jesus in His famous Mountain Message.

This is one of the more difficult sayings of the Savior. What did He mean? To whom was He referring? And how can we apply it? Continue reading

Seven Suggestions for Living in Uncertain Times

Sunday’s unprecedented, though not unexpected announcement by President Biden that he will not seek reelection sent shock waves through the media and apparently surprised his campaign supporters.

This, of course, comes just a week after former President Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on his life.

Biden’s announcement has turned the 2024 election upside down as Democrats debate who their candidate should be–Vice President Harris or someone else nominated from an open convention. Continue reading

The Bible is Fundamental

This humorous story has been told by preachers through the years. In fact, I’ve probably told it. However, the Wyckiffe Handbook of Preaching and Preachers claims this actually happened to Joseph Parker, a 19th century preacher in London. Continue reading

Weekly Recap: July 15-19

Greetings from Welland, Ontario, Canada

This week is one of the highlights of our trip to Canada–VBS at the Wellandport Church.

This is the 5th year I have taught the adult class since we began coming in 2018.  This year’s theme was based on the FLOOD and the VBS material supplied by Apologetics Press. Although small in number by US standards, the Wellandport Church puts on a top notch VBS,  The  planning and preparation was evident from the decor the classroom and building, to the activities of the teachers, and the obvious excitement and enthusiasm of the children.  It was a pleasure to have a part on this year’s study.
