Not long ago my Canadian facebook friend, Rob DE Man, posted a quote from the renowned physicist, David Berlinski. It’s from his book “The Devil’s Delusion: Atheism and Its Scientific Pretensions.”
Berlinski, who appeared in Ben Stein’s 2008 documentary, Expelled, which exposed the silencing of educators who questioned the theory of macro evolution, has long been a fierce opponent of the Darwinian theory.
Consider his questions and blunt rebuttal.
Has anyone provided proof of God’s inexistence? Not even close.
Has quantum cosmology explained the emergence of the universe or why it is here? Not even close.
Have our sciences explained why our universe seems to be fine-tuned to allow for the existence of life? Not even close.
Are physicists and biologists willing to believe in anything so long as it is not religious thought? Close enough.
Has rationalism and moral thought provided us with an understanding of what is good, what is right, and what is moral? Not close enough.
Has secularism in the terrible 20th century been a force for good? Not even close, to being close.
Is there a narrow and oppressive orthodoxy in the sciences? Close enough.
Does anything in the sciences or their philosophy justify the claim that religious belief is irrational? Not even in the ball park.
Is scientific atheism a frivolous exercise in intellectual contempt? Dead on.
In article by Janie B. Cheaney, “Scientism Meets Its Match,” posted on facebook by my friend Dennis Fink, Berlinski is described as a “perennial gladfly to the scientific establishment.”
Cheaney writes that Berlinski is “senior fellow of the Discovery Institute, the Seattle-based think tank that (quoting from its website) “investigates the life-changing possibilities of a universe brimming with information and intelligent design.”
Berlinski is “a best selling author, holds a PhD from Princeton University and has taught philosophy and mathematics at universities in France and the United States.” On his web page in the form of articles, videos, and blog posts, he offers compelling evidence for Intelligence Design and a rebuttal of the classic theory of evolution.
Berlinski’s work reminds us a fact that we’ve known for years–not all scientists are atheists or evolutionists. There are many in academia and in the scientific community who identify as Creationists.
Of course, for those of us who are not equipped with a scientific background, we simply believe the first verse of the Bible. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”
“By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible” (Heb. 11:1).
Like the Psalmist a 1,000 years before Christ, we exclaim, “The Heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork” (Ps. 19:1).
Finally, we echo the words of writer, Janie Cheaney. “There remains, at the heart of the universe, the profound mystery of life itself: “a kind of intelligence evident nowhere else,” whose “fantastic and controlled complexity, its brilliant inventiveness and diversity, its sheer difference from anything else in this or any other world” is beyond the reach of science to explain.”
