Stimulate Your Desire for Growth

Matt Woodley, managing editor of PreachingToday.com, tells about the time he was playing on the Freshman basketball team and they were down 8 points at half-time to a team they should have been beating.

Coach Hammerstien, affectionately nick-named “The Hammer” by his players, for his demanding demeanor and occasional outbursts, was livid when they went into the locker room. In the midst of his lecture about their lackluster performance Woodley said he yawned. Continue reading

Weekly Recap: July 23-28

Greetings from Port Colborne, Ontario, Canada

Well, our time in the home of the Canucks is swiftly coming to an end.

Tomorrow I’m preaching my final lesson at Wellandport. Then we are heading back to the states on Monday.  It’s been great being with our special friends and brethren.  We’ve enjoyed sharing the Word. The excitement of VBS. Making new friends.  Fellowship over good food. In home hospitality. Seeing The Falls (again) and marveling over God’s awesome power (again).  The best Gelato this side of Italy. Cooler weather.  Laugher. Love. And even a few tears.  We may go home, but these wonderful folks will continue to occupy a special place in our hearts. Continue reading

Let Your Pain Make You Better, Not Bitter

Pain is a problem for many people. No, not just the suffering, but understanding “why.”

While volumes have been written on the subject, this short facebook post from “Daily Devotionals by Rick Warren”, with credit given to the source “How to Get Through What You’re Going Through,” offers some insight. Continue reading

Love is Kind

According to the calendar of usual and little known holidays today is “National Love is Kind Day.”

It was created by Rosie Aiello and her daughter Sunny who were “trapped in an emotionally, mentally and financially abusive relationship for nearly 25 years,” according to her web page Love is Kind Network.

Rosie escaped that abusive relationship and now is trying to help other women in similar circumstances. Continue reading

Psalm 100

Lisa Earby, a Cleveland, Tennessee, teacher relates a funny story about reading one-on-one with a first grader.

For the first time the student discovered the words “thank you” in print. Lisa hoped her pupil would use some of the reading strategies she’d learned to figure out the words. However, after a few moments, Lisa decided to tell her the word “thank.” When she didn’t respond, Lisa emphatically said, “Thank.” Continue reading

Why Jim Denison Refuses to See “Oppenheimer”

Yesterday on the Denison Forum, this post appeared on his daily article: “Why I refuse to see “Oppenheimer”—and you should, too”.

I had heard about the Christopher Nolan  movie and its impressive weekend opening against “Barbie”, grossing $80.5 million dollars. It’s about the life of the brilliant scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer who helped create the first atomic bomb.

Although Norma Jean and I don’t attend movies as often as we once did, Denison’s post assured me that we won’t be seeing this one. Continue reading

3 More Things You Must Give Up If You Want to Grow Up

According to blogger and self-improvement writer, Moreno Zugaro “when native tribes in Africa want to catch a monkey, they drill a hole into a rock or tree – large enough for a monkey’s hand, but too small for a clenched monkey fist.”

Zugaro says they then fill it with peanuts “Once a monkey grabs the treat, it can’t get its hand out of the hole anymore. It panics, holding on to the very thing that keeps it trapped. Continue reading

Weekly Recap: July 17-21

Greeting from Port Colborne, Ontario, Canada

This week has been really busy.  We participated in the Wellandport VBS, teaching the adult class.

Our theme was “Fearless Deeds of the Defenders.”  It was an incredibly exciting, encouraging and faith-strengthening week. This little church puts on a BIG VBS.  It was well attended by the local members and attracted a number of visitors.  We had 40+ in  the childrens’ classes. And 20-25 in the adult class. We commend these brothers and sisters for the dedication, devotion and hard work putting this together.

BTW,  our battle cry is now, “FEARLESS.” Continue reading

“In Christ Alone My Hope is Found”

“The lives of a 6th grade class in East Harlem were forever changed on the day self-made millionaire Eugene Land challenged them with the promise, ‘Stay in school, and I’ll help pay the college tuition for every one of you.’”

“One student said, ‘I had something to look forward to, something waiting for me. It was a golden feeling.’ Nearly 90% of that class went on to graduate from high school.” Continue reading

Remembering the Man on the Moon

On this day in history, July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong, an American astronaut, became the first human being to walk on the surface of the moon.

Norma Jean and I had only been married 11 months. But I remember it like it was yesterday. I had an out of town preaching appointment in North Florida. But we returned to our little apartment on Bearss Avenue in Tampa, Florida, just in time. Turned on our little black and white TV and watched in amazement Continue reading
