Our God Is An Awesome God

“One of my pet peeves is today’s casual use of the word ‘awesome.’ Many things are called awesome that are not at all awesome but very ordinary,” posted my facebook friend Michael D. Greene.  “Awesome should be reserved for things that truly inspire or move us to awe.”

I share in Michael’s feelings about the word “Awesome.”  To illustrates what is truly awe inspiring Michael shared a piece from his friend John Gott, who works in the field of science, that ought to inspire us to awe as it deals with the awesome power of the God we serve. Continue reading

10 Questions To Detect Sports Idolatry

On this day in history, April 6th, the ancient Greek tradition of the Olympics was reborn in Athens at the Panathenaic Stadium.

When we were in Athens several years ago, Norma Jean and I visited the Stadium, the only one in the world built entirely of marble. It was originally built in the 4th century B.C. Rebuilt in 144 B.C. Then excavated in 1869, and hosted the first modern Olympics in 1896.

When we visited, I wondered if the apostle Paul might have visited this Stadium. As he walked around Athens, seeing the many monuments erected in honor of their gods, it’s both possible and probable. Continue reading

Focus on Self-Development, Not Self-Fulfillment

“Something in human nature tempts us to stay where we’re comfortable,” wrote the late Fred Smith, a Dallas businessman and board member of Christianity Today.

In an article in Leadership Magazine Smith wrote about “Training to Reach the Top.” The theme and thesis of his article spoke to the importance of personal growth, getting out of one’s comfort zone and development in the business world, especially for those in leadership positions.
