“It’s the small things that make a difference,” says Gayle King, co-host of CBS this morning.
In an interview with USA Weekend, Gayle shares her belief in giving back to help others as she promotes the annual “Make a Difference Day” which is this Saturday, October 26.
For over 20 years USA Magazine and Points of Light Foundation have partnered on the fourth Saturday in October to sponsor “Make a Difference Day.” They call on average citizens to take on a project in their community and do something to make a difference. This is good because it emphasizes that one person with an idea can accomplish much. Over three million people will volunteer to make a difference in the lives of over 20 million people.

In the Bible we see one person making a difference. One man lead the children of Israel out of Egypt. One woman, a Jewish girl named Esther, rescued her nation from a Holocaust. And one man single-handedly led the Jewish people in rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem–Nehemiah.
Both Peter and Paul are prominent preachers in the New Testament. Yet, almost forgotten and unknown people were involved in them coming to Christ. It was Peter’s brother, Andrew, who first found Jesus and said to him. “We have found the Messiah.” And the Bible simply says, “And he brought him to Jesus.”
In Acts 9 we learn that it was the disciple Ananias who received God’s call, humbly said “Here am I,” and went to preach the gospel to Saul of Tarsus who was notorious for persecuting Christians. Saul became the apostle Paul. And touched thousands of lives on his missionary journeys.
Dedicated Christians doing what they could, made a difference. Dorcas sewing garments. Phoebe a servant of the church and a helper to Paul. And then there was Epaenetus. Andronicus. Junia. Amplias. Urbanus. And Stachys. Don’t know them? Paul did. And so did the Lord! They made a difference.
With so much emphasis upon collective groups, like the church, we need to remember it’s individuals who compose them. It’s common folks who work jobs. Live in neighborhoods. And daily go about their business. To each of us the Bible says, “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.” (Gal. 6:10)
God says, “Do good.” When you can. Where you can. How you can. To whom you can.
It may be this Saturday on “Make a Difference Day.” It may be on Sunday when you welcome a new member. Or on Wednesday when you take a meal to a sick friend. Or on Thursday when you visit a shut in. It may be on Monday when you write notes and make calls to people who need some encouragement. Or Tuesday when you do community volunteer work. Or Friday night by taking someone out to eat.
It may be a simple smile. A cheery “Hello.” A hug. A firm hand shake. A pat on the day. A few spare dollars to a worthy cause. A care package to a soldier overseas. Or being a friend to little child.
The “Make a Difference Day” is good. It promotes giving. Brings people together. And helps others. But it’s once a year. How about making each day “make a difference day”? Don’t know where to start? Try the home where you live! I suspect someone there would really appreciate it! And it would make a difference!
